Brookshire Grocery Co. hosts 35th annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive

TYLER, Texas, Nov. 14, 2016 – Brookshire Grocery Co. is once again working to provide food for people in need through its 35th annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive.

Beginning Nov. 16 and continuing through Dec. 21, Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods and FRESH by Brookshire’s stores throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas will be collecting donations of non-perishable food items distributed through local service organizations and food pantries to people in need. Customers may purchase and donate pre-assembled “grab bags” for $5 or scan coupons for $1 or $5 that will be used to purchase additional food items.

The goal is to provide a week’s worth of food to approximately 15,000 households throughout the company’s market area. Recipients will receive a box of non-perishable food items such as canned meat and vegetables, peanut butter, dried beans, rice and pasta, sugar and flour, along with a coupon for a free roasting hen.

“Our mission at Brookshire Grocery Company is to make communities better through our people, products, stores and service, and our annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive is one of many efforts that helps accomplish this goal. Our food drive gives our employees and customers the opportunity to join us in helping provide food for thousands of people in need in local communities during the holidays,” said Brad Brookshire, Chairman, and CEO.

The Spirit of Christmas Food Drive began in Tyler in 1982 with the Rose City Kiwanis Club, with approximately 90 families in the Tyler area receiving assistance. Last year was the most successful food drive to date, with a more than 25 percent increase in overall sales of grab bags and scan coupons over the previous year. Approximately 16,000 households throughout BGC’s market area were assisted through the food drive. In total, nearly 500,000 pounds of food was collected and donated to local service organizations and food pantries for distribution to families in need.
