COMMERCE POLICE ASSISTS ANIMAL SHELTER IN RESCUING 6 DOGS

Commerce Detectives responded to an animal welfare call in the 600 block of 1st street.

Detectives with the Commerce Police Department went to do a welfare check on 6 dogs after witnesses came forward making accusations of neglect and cruelty.  Upon arrival, officers found that the dogs on the property were chained up in a manner that made the chains become very short because they became entangled.  There was no evidence of shelter or water and the dogs appeared to be somewhat malnourished.  On the property, officers also found an animal carcass.

After speaking with the owner, she released custody of the dogs to the city and the dogs were picked up by animal control.  The dogs have been taken to a veterinary clinic for medical assessment.

The case has been referred to the SPCA and the dogs will be picked up by the agency.
