Thursday morning at approximately 8:26 am, troopers responded to a two vehicle fatal crash on US-271 in Upshur County near Gilmer. Preliminary crash investigation revealed that a 1996 Dodge van was traveling north on US-271 in the inside lane. A 1998 Toyota Avalon was traveling south on US-271 in the inside lane. The driver of the Toyota was traveling at an unsafe speed for the wet roadway and lost traction. The Toyota began to skid and rotate. It crossed into the northbound traffic lanes where it was struck by the Dodge van.
The driver of the Toyota was identified as 20 year old Leno Garza Aguirre of Mt. Pleasant. Aguirre was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Rhonda Welch, his body taken to Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer.
The driver of the Dodge van was identified as 47 year oldJames Fuller of Jacksonville. He was taken to ETMC-Pittsburg in stable condition with non-incapacitating injuries.
