High school girls basketball playoffs continue on with the Area Round with some teams advancing while others see their season come to an end.
Paris – The Honey Grove Lady Warriors are in the Regional quarterfinals after taking down Hawkins, 48-33. Next the Lady Warriors will meet with Martins Mill who eliminated the Clarksville Lady Tigers last night, 90-44. The winner will advance to the Class 2A Region II tournament. Time and location between Honey Grove and Martins Mill are still to be determined. The Rivercrest Lady Rebels also finish their season last night in a 60-48 loss at the hands of the Campbell Lady Indians.
Mount Pleasant – The girls out of district 13-3A thrive as the Chapel Hill Lady Devils, Mt Vernon Lady Tigers, and Winnsboro Lady Raiders all advance to the Regional Quarter-Final round. Chapel Hill takes down Harmony, 43-30 and will be up against the winner of Sabine and Queen City being played this evening. Meanwhile, Mt Vernon and Winnsboro are on a collision course after the Purple Lady Tigers defeat Winona, 73-46 and the Lady Raiders edge out Troup, 61-56. It’ll be the Mt Vernon girls against their rival Winnsboro in round three. Time and location are still to be determined.
Sulphur Springs – The Mt Vernon Lady Tigers and Winnsboro Lady Raiders are on a collision course for the Regional Quarter-Final round. The Purple Lady Tigers defeat Winona, 73-46 and the Lady Raiders edge out Troup, 61-56. It’ll be the Mt Vernon girls against their rival Winnsboro in round three. Time and location are still to be determined. The Campbell Lady Indians defeat the Rivercrest Lady Rebels, 60-48. Campbell will take on the winner of tonight’s game between Union Grove and Blue Ridge. The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats fall to Frisco Lone Star, 71-41, ending their season. Tonight Miller Grove will be up against Dodd City at Paris’ Chisum High School at 6:00 pm followed by Saltillo and Ector.
NBA All-Star weekend begins tonight with the Rising Stars Challenge featuring Dallas Mavericks rookie guard, Dennis Smith Jr. The All-Star festivities continue tomorrow with Smith Jr. taking part in the Slam Dunk Contest while Eric Gordon defends his 2017 title in the 3-point contest. Then, of course, on Sunday Team LeBron will face off with Team Curry in the All-Star game. Tip-off is at 7:00 pm.
It was another wild night in college hoops. The Houston Cougars beat No. 5 Cincinnati, 67-62. Wisconsin defeats sixth-ranked Purdue, 57-53, while Penn State blows out No. 8 Ohio State, 79-56.
And the PyeongChang Winter Olympic medal counter shows Norway surging ahead with 19 total medals including six golds, but Germany has been dominant leading the field with nine golds. Team USA has collected eight total medals so far in the winter games, including five gold medals.
