MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The 2015-16 LeTourneau University volleyball team has been honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as a recipient of the AVCA Team Academic Award.

“Congratulations to the coaches and institutions that won the 2016 AVCA Team Academic Award,” said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. “It is no accident that a volleyball coaches association recognizes academic excellence as a team, rather than an individual, achievement. Players influence each other, both in execution on the court and discipline in the classroom.”

“This is an award that shows the determination of the kids in our program,” said LeTourneau head coach Scott Peluso. “I have been hoping that we would work our way into this award but knew with the high level of academics at LeTourneau University that would be tough. I am so proud of our team for achieving this goal!”

The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA. There were 140 NCAA Division III schools. They qualified for the honor in 2015-16, including four teams in the American Southwest Conference.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The LeTourneau University women’s soccer staff recently announced the addition of Kelli Sonnier from Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Kelli Sonnier – 5’10 – Forward – Lake Charles, Louisiana (Barbe HS)

Sonnier earned first team all-state and all-district honors as a senior. Throughout her career at Barbe High School, she scored a school-record 32 goals during her senior season and 87 for her four-year career. She was a four-year letter winner and three-time all-district selection. Sonnier also led her club team to a state title. At LeTourneau, she plans on majoring in business.

Coach Antonisse on Sonnier: “Kelli is a very dynamic striker, who had an excellent high school career at Barbe High School in Lake Charles, LA. We are very excited to have a forward with her ability join us this fall. She will be a great addition to our program and will add a big piece of the puzzle to our increasingly talented roster.
