Mount Pleasant #5 Paris Win in Today’s Local Sports

Paris – In high school hoops last night the 5th ranked Paris Wildcats from class 4A wrap up the district 15 title following their 78-35 win over Pittsburg. The win gives Paris an 8-0 district record. The only team who could mathematically tie for the district title would be the Pleasant Grove Hawks. But those hopes are slim after the North Lamar Panthers protect their home court with a 63-51 win over PG. North Lamar is 4-4 in district play. The Pantherette’s, meanwhile beat Pleasant Grove as well 61-52 and are now in a tie for 2nd place in the district at the season’s end. The tiebreaker is still being decided. Another district Champion, the Clarksville Lady Tigers win over Detroit 60-42. And the Honey Grove Lady Warriors grab a share of their district championship after beating 25th ranked Wolfe City 39-28 And the Prairiland Patriots pull off the biggest upset of the district season, defeating Hooks 57-42.

Mount Pleasant – In high school hoops last night the Mt. Pleasant Tigers are coming down the stretch of the season strong, beating the Longview Lobos on the road 58-44. With the win, the Tigers improve to 9-3 in district 15-5A and with Texas high beating Marshall last night, Mt. Pleasant still has a shot at the district title. The Chapel Hill Red Devils explode in the second half to beat Hughes Springs 72-47. The Chapel Hill boys improve to 7-3 in district play and host Queen City on Friday. And the Daingerfield Tigers take down Mt. Vernon 54-35 to lock in the district 16-3A title. Playoffs for the girls begin next week. The 7th ranked Winnsboro Lady Raiders, the 17 ranked Chapel Hill Lady Devils and the 18th ranked Mt. Vernon Lady Tigers all made the post season.

Sulphur Springs – High school hoops wrapped up for girls basketball last night, while the boys begin the stretch run. The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats wrap up a district title with a dominating win over Pine Tree 47-19. With the win, Sulphur Springs finishes the regular season with a 12-2 district record and a 25-6 record overall. Playoffs begin next week. The Sulphur Springs boys fall to the Pirates 62-58 as their district record drops to 3-9 on the season. Meanwhile, the Mt. Vernon boys fall to Daingerfield 54-35. As mentioned the regular season for the girls is over. Sulphur Springs from class 5A, along with the 7th ranked Winnsboro Lady Raiders and 18th ranked Mt. Vernon Lady Tigers begin the playoffs next week.

In college hoops, the Texas A&M Commerce Lions are on the road tonight against the Texas A&M Kingsville. Tip off is at 7:30.

In the NHL the Dallas Stars win in overtime 4-3 over the Wild in Minnesota. Four different Stars scored on the night, but it was John Klingberg who netted the overtime goal, while Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin each had two assists. The win gives Dallas 73 points on the season, 2nd in the western conference.

While the Stars pulled out a tight win in overtime, the Dallas Mavericks fall to Utah 121-119 in OT. The loss gives the Mavs a 29-26 record, and remain in 6th in the west, only one game ahead of the Jazz.

And in NCAA Division 1 basketball the 6th ranked Kansas Jayhawks survive 10th ranked West Virginia 75-65. However, in a pair of upsets number 5 Xavier loses to unranked Craighton 70-56 and 8th ranked Michigan State falls in overtime to number 18 Purdue.
