Rangers Win in Baltimore Plus Olympics Begin Today

Rangers Orioles Baseball

It’s an exciting weekend for area football and volleyball teams. On the gridiron, teams will be in full pads for the first time this season. Many will also take part in intra-squad scrimmages. Next weekend will begin scrimmages against competition from other schools. Local volleyball teams will tune up this weekend, with many playing round robin style scrimmages, preparing them for the start of the regular season next week.

Last night the Texas Rangers pick up a win over the Baltimore Orioles 5-3. On Wednesday Carlos Beltran hit his first home run as a Rangers. Last night it was Jonathan Lucroy hitting his first Texas blast. With the win, the Rangers improve to 63-46 and lead the Houston Astros by 6.5 games in the AL West. The Rangers and Astros begin a three game set tonight in Houston. First pitch [on KPLT 1490am and 96.3fm] is set for 7:10.

The Dallas Cowboys continue training camp at Oxnard, California. The search for a backup quarterback continues as well. With Tony Romo given the day off and Kellen Moore injured, rookie 4th rounder Dak Prescott out of Mississippi State took first team reps, while 2nd year man Jameill Showers took snaps with the 2nd and 3rd units. The Cowboys return to practice this afternoon.

And the 31st summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro will host the opening ceremony tonight. Swimmer Michael Phelps will carry the U.S flag after being designated as the country’s flag bearer by his fellow Olympians. Phelps is the most decorated athlete in the games history with 22 medals, including 18 gold. The ceremony tonight begins at 6pm.
