Saturday, June 4, the Corps of Engineers Hurricane Creek Recreation area on Lake O’ The Pines, was the scene of the 17th Annual Kids Free Fish Day!

Pine Cone Fishing Club sponsored and eagerly supported by community volunteers and local businesses, the event, in spite of the constant threat of rain and recent flooding on area lakes and streams, drew nearly 200 young girls & boys, ages 2 – 16, including parents and accompanying adults from all over Texas and Louisiana.

After bank fishing for three hours, from 9:00 until noon, the kids proudly brought in their catches of Bluegill, Catfish, Bass and, yes, even turtles, some weighing less than the digital scales could register but logged in regardless.

Five different age groups received trophies for the heaviest total weight of a stringer, but the real cash prizes went to the top three young anglers who weighed in the biggest fish. The top prize of $150 went to Jonathan Buckner of Jefferson, while his sister Grace Buckner took home her second place winnings of $75, and third place honors of $50 were scooped up by Colton Ballew.

Tackle, live bait, snacks, drinks, and hot dogs were all furnished totally free to all participants and their accompanying adults. Also, a FREE backpack filled with all kinds of goodies was awarded to each of the kids at registration!!!
