Upshur County Man Sentenced In Grandson’s Death

An East Texas man has been sentenced in Upshur County District Court to 50 years in prison for causing his two-year-old grandson’s death in a drunk driving crash. Randell Jay Phillips, 42, of Big Sandy, must serve at least 25 years behind bars before he can be considered for parole. The reason that Phillips was tried for murder instead of intoxication manslaughter was that he had two prior drunk driving convictions.
