About Those Holiday Traditions

 

From dressing their cat up in a vacation costume to must-win video games on Christmas morning, a brand new research reveals a few of people’s quirky festive traditions. According to a survey from Kohl’s Department Store conducted by OnePoll:

  • 52% of Americans say they work to replicate holidays from their childhood, as they continue to celebrate the majority of traditions they had while growing up.
  • 50% report celebrating traditions that have been passed down in their family for generations
  • 32% are continuing traditions from their grandparents
  • 72% carry on traditions from their great-grandparents or before
  • 20% report having a quirky holiday tradition
  • 48% say they have a gift they give or receive every year
  • The top gifts people give or receive each year include ornaments (42%), Pajamas (35%). and blankets (28%)
  • 16% say they grew up with the holiday tradition of wearing matching pajamas

The Most Popular American Holiday Traditions:

  1. Decorating a Christmas tree
  2. Decorating the house
  3. Watching holiday movies
  4. Playing holiday music
  5. Sending out holiday cards
  6. Driving or walking around the neighborhood to see the holiday lights/decorations
  7. Displaying Christmas stockings
  8. Drinking hot chocolate
  9. Baking holiday desserts as a family
  10. Going holiday shopping on Black Friday
  11. Choosing and buying a Christmas tree
  12. Holiday shopping on Cyber Monday
  13. Having the same holiday meal every year
  14. Opening one present the night before the holiday
  15. Going window shopping
  16. Taking photographs with Santa
  17. Setting up a nativity scene
  18. Giving and/or receiving a holiday ornament every year
  19. Setting out milk and cookies for Santa
  20. Hanging mistletoe

The survey also revealed some quirky holiday traditions:

  • Dressing their cat up in a holiday costume
  • Playing Mario Kart games on Christmas morning
  • Exchanging ugly ornaments
  • Camping in the living room on the night of Christmas Eve
  • Opening all their presents on Christmas Eve
  • Making ornaments with their dog’s paw print
  • Watching horror movies on Christmas day
  • Sending holiday cards to people they don’t know
  • Hiding Christmas presents for the younger kids
  • Making snow angels
  • Wearing silly Christmas pajamas
