The Allen Police Department says it has no record that the mother of suspected El Paso shooter Patrick Crusius called them when she became concerned that he had an assault-type rifle. They say they have only three incidents involving Crusius – one involving a false burglar alarm, a Plano ISD bus accident and when he ran away from home but soon returned.
Here’s their official statement:
On the evening of Wednesday, August 7, 2019, CNN reported that the mother of the El Paso shooting suspect called the Allen Police Department in reference to her son ordering “an ‘AK’ type firearm.”
Upon reading this news article, the Allen Police Support Services Division began to review phone records in an attempt to locate this call.
On Thursday, June 27, 2019 at approximately 11:15 a.m., a call came into the main line of the department. Although informational calls to the main line of the department are not recorded, an internal security camera recorded one side of the conversation.
The Public Safety Officer answered informational questions about firearms possession and ownership and additionally inquired about the emotional state and intentions of the person who had ordered the weapon.
The information relayed by the caller did not warrant additional law enforcement involvement because, as reported in the CNN news article, the caller indicated that her inquiry “was not motivated out of a concern that her son posed a threat to anybody.”
A Public Safety Officer is a non-sworn employee who provides information and handles minor or delayed calls for service, and it is not uncommon for police employees to handle informational calls related to firearms and firearms possession.
