The Texas A&M Commerce Lion football team was crowned as NCAA Division II National Champions on Saturday evening after beating West Florida, 37-27. The record-setting Lion offense re-wrote the history books as quarterback Luis Perez set a new Division II mark for most passing yards in a post-season with 1,570. Freshman running back E.J. Thompson had a season-high 110 yards rushing in the title game. The Commerce Lions finish the season 14-1 overall and won their five playoff games by an average margin of 10.2 points per game.
The Dallas Cowboys win an ugly game over the Oakland Raiders, 20-17. The secondary came up big for the Cowboys breaking up seven passes while safety Jeff Heath hit Raiders quarterback Derek Carr as he stretched for the goal line in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, causing him to fumble the ball out of the end zone and turning the ball over to Dallas. The Cowboys have an 8-6 record on the season as running back Ezekiel Elliott is set to return from his six-game suspension this weekend in a crucial game against Seattle.
The Dallas Mavericks continue to play well against the San Antonio Spurs, but fall on Saturday evening, 98-96. Maxi Kleber leads the Mavs with 21 points and three blocked shots. Dirk dropped 19, while Yogi Ferrell had 17 points and 11 rebound double-double. The Mavs drop to 8-22 on the season as they return to the floor tonight against the Phoenix Suns. Tip-off tonight at the American Airline Center is set for 7:30.
And the Dallas Stars continue one of their toughest stretches of the season on their schedule as they lose in overtime to Philadelphia, 2-1. The Stars pick up a point giving them 38 on the season, which puts them in the second wildcard spot behind a hot Chicago Blackhawks team. Dallas continues their tough stretch tomorrow night at home when they host the Washington Capitals at the A-A-C.
