LeTourneau University softball was picked to finish eighth in the American Southwest Conference, following a vote of the league’s head coaches, sports information directors, and select media members, the ASC office announced Thursday.

Also, the league announced a Watch List that included LeTourneau senior Courtney Matulis<http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3208> (UT), Junior Ashlin Roach<http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3210> (SS) and sophomore Macey Mize<http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3209> (C).

Ashlin Roach<http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3210> (Hughes Springs, Texas) was named second-team all-ASC in the 2016 season. Roach played and started 41 games as a sophomore. He was the co-leader in doubles (12), third in batting average (.330), on-base percentage (.375) and total bases (54), fourth in slugging percentage (.495). He had hits (36), tied for fourth in home runs (2), fifth in RBI (17) and runs scored (16).

Courtney Matulis<http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3208> (Pittsburg, Texas) was named honorable mention after her junior campaign as she played in 37 games, hitting at a .308 clip for the YellowJackets. She led the team in stolen bases (11), fourth in runs scored (18). Fifth in on-base percentage (.345) and hits (33).

Macey Mize<http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3209> (Waco, Texas) will take her place behind home plate this season for the YellowJackets. Mize played in 36 games in her freshman season hitting .292 and finishing second in slugging percentage (.521), tied for third in RBI (18), tied for third in doubles (10) and tied for second in home runs (4).

The 2016 season marked the third straight American Southwest Conference Tournament appearance for LeTourneau softball. It is the first time in program history that LETU has reached the tournament in three-straight years.

The defending NCAA Division III Champions, UT Tyler received 277 points and 18 first-place votes to lead the ASC poll. The Patriots went 29-0 in conference last season to win the ASC on the way to their first national championship.

The 2017 season is the 19th in ASC softball history. Opening day for the YellowJackets will be Saturday, February 4th as they square off with Centenary College (LA) in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. in Shreveport. LeTourneau will open conference play the following week on Friday, February 10th as they host Mary Hardin-Baylor at 3 p.m. at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.

In addition, the league announced a Watch List that included LeTourneau senior second baseman Kyle Jacobs<http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=2733> and sophomore pitcher Andrew Harlan<http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=2752>.

Jacobs earned Second Team All-ASC honors a season ago as he led the team in home runs (3), walks (21) and on-base percentage (.427). The Leander, Texas native was also second in RBIs (20), slugging percentage (.420), and runs scored (22); tied for second in total bases with Sean Sellers (50); third in batting average (.290), hits (35) and tied for third in doubles (6).

Harlan, in his freshman season, posted a 4-7 record with a 4.15 ERA in 12 starts. He led the team with 80.1 innings pitched en-route to a team-high five complete games to go along with 41 strikeouts which was second on the team. The Lewisville High School product was named an honorable mention after the 2016 campaign.

The 2016 season marked the third-straight year that LeTourneau baseball reached the American Southwest Conference Tournament. It is the first time in program history that LETU has reached the tournament in three-straight years. LETU won the ASC Championship in 2014 after a 33-15 season and made their first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

UT Tyler received 329 points and 15 first-place votes to lead the ASC poll. The defending ASC champion is also ranked No. 18 in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll.

The 2017 season is the 21st in ASC baseball history. Opening day for the YellowJackets will be February 10th as they host Arlington Baptist in a non-conference double-header starting at 5 p.m. LeTourneau will open conference play on Friday, February 24th as they host East Texas Baptist University at 6 p.m. at Conrad-Vernon Field.
