Whitfield, Garcia Selected as Women’s Basketball Players of the Week

EAST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Keauna Whitfield, Sr., G, LeTourneau

LeTourneau senior guard Keauna Whitfield (Rosebud, Texas) scored 27 points with seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the YellowJackets’ 74-60 victory at UNT Dallas opens the season. She scored 18 points in the first half of the game on 8-ofo-14 shooting. For the game, Whitfield shot 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from the field. It is her second career Player of the Week award.

WEST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Mallory Garcia, So., G, Howard Payne

Howard Payne senior guard Mallory Garcia (Brownwood, Texas) scored 12 points off the bench in a loss at NCAA Division I foe, Tarleton State. She was 4-for-7 from the three-point line in the game. For the week, Garcia averaged 9.5 points per game and shot 60 percent (6-of-10) from outside against a pair of DI opponents.

WEST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Josiah Johnson, G, So., Mary Hardin-Baylor

Mary Hardin-Baylor sophomore guard Josiah Johnson (Big Sandy, Texas) led the Cru in a pair of victories in Abilene, averaging 28.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while shooting 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from the field and 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from outside. He scored 30 points in UMHB’s season-opening 83-80 win at Hardin-Simmons and added 26 points in a 94-84 victory against McMurry. Johnson also shot 85.7 percent (18-of-21) from the free-throw line.

WEST DIVISION

Hardin-Simmons junior guard Chase Cobb (Houston, Texas) hit several big shots for the Cowboys, including back-to-back three-pointers in the final two minutes of a 74-73 victory against Sul Ross State. He averaged 14.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game for the week while shooting 48 percent (12-of-25) from outside.

McMurry senior guard Khalil Butler (Baltimore, Md.) matched his career-high with 25 points in a 94-84 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor. He averaged 17.0 points in two games, 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 3.0 steals per contest while shooting 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from the field and 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from three-point range.

Sul Ross State senior guard Tristen Licon (El Paso, Texas) averaged 19.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game as the Lobos went 1-1 in Abilene. He recorded a double-double with 18 points and 14 boards while dishing out five assists in a 73-50 victory at McMurry. Licon followed with 20 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals in a 74-73 loss at Hardin-Simmons. He also was 11-for-11 at the free-throw line during the week.
