AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE GOLFERS OF THE WEEK

MEN’S GOLFER OF THE WEEK: Ryan Kropp, Sr., UT Dallas

UT Dallas senior Ryan Kropp (Brighton, Colo.) helped propel the Comets to a one-stroke victory over No. 8 Mary Hardin-Baylor at the Duel at Watters Creek in Plano last Wednesday. Kropp shot a one-under 71 to spark the Comets to a 307 round, one shot better than the Cru (308).

WOMEN’S GOLFER OF THE WEEK: Karen Alvarez, Fr., UT Dallas

UT Dallas freshman Karen Alvarez (Katy, Texas) won the Alamo City Classic in San Antonio with a 76-74=150 for +8, edging teammate Lindy Patterson by a stroke. Her performance helped the Comets win the tournament by 20 strokes over host Trinity (Texas). It is Alvarez’s third career Golfer of the Week award.

MEN

Mary Hardin-Baylor freshman William Sammons (Spring, Texas) finished three-under-par to take second place individually at the Alamo City Classic. He was one of just three players in the event to be under par in both rounds. William also shot 80 as the Cru was edged by one stroke in a dual match with UT Dallas last Wednesday.

WEST DIVISION WOMEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Landry Laywell, So., Hardin-Simmons

Hardin-Simmons sophomore Landry Laywell (Thorndale, Texas) went 1-1 at No. 2 singles for the Cowgirls, including earning their only point against Trinity (Texas) with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

EAST DIVISION WOMEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Samantha Wong, Jr., UT Dallas

UT Dallas junior Samantha Wong (Grapevine, Texas) was one of two Comets to earn a singles victory in Saturday’s season-opening 4-2 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State. She won decisively at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

WEST DIVISION MEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Joshua Bode, Jr., Concordia Texas

Concordia Texas junior Joshua Bode (Austin, Texas) won both his match-ups in the Tornados 5-4 loss to Texas Wesleyan. He won 6-2, 6-1 against the Rams in No. 1 singles and teamed with Esteban Arredondo for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles.

EAST DIVISION MEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ashwin Vaithianathan, Sr., UT Dallas

UT Dallas senior Ashwin Vaithianathan (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) picked up the lone point in the Comets’ 6-1 home loss to NCAA Division II’s Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday. He earned a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory at number one singles and teamed with Ritvik Ganesan in a 7-6 (5) loss at number one doubles. It is his second career Player of the Week honors.

Ozarks junior Kaitlin Gutierrez (Ennis, Texas) posted a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles against Covenant.

Hardin-Simmons junior Chris Beavers (Lorena, Texas) went 1-1 in singles for the Cowboys, earning a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4 against Dallas Baptist.

McMurry junior Connor Hogan (Hideaway, Texas) won a three-set thriller in No. 4 singles 1-6, 6-1, 10-5 in the War Hawks’ 7-2 loss to Dallas Baptist. He also suffered a loss to Trinity (Texas).

MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jacob White, So., LeTourneau

LeTourneau sophomore Jacob White (League City, Texas) finished fourth in the 60-meter dash at the Herm Wilson Invitational hosted by Wichita State. He recorded a 7.07 60 time, ranking 23rd in Division III. White also ran the 200 meters in 22.97 seconds and the 400 in 51.54 seconds. It is White’s second Athlete of the Week of the season and third of his career.

MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jack Miller, Jr., LeTourneau

LeTourneau junior Jack Miller (Diana, Texas) placed second in the pole vault, among NCAA Division I and II competition, clearing 4.90 meters (16 ft.-0.75 in.) the Herm Wilson Invitational in Wichita, Kan. His mark, which is a personal best, ranks second in the nation. It is Miller’s second Athlete of the Week of the season and fifth of his career.

WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Alexis Segura, Gr., LeTourneau

LeTourneau graduate student Alexis Segura (Austin, Texas) placed fifth in the mile at the Herm Wilson Invitational, running a time of 5:18.66. Her mark ranks 21st in the nation, earning Segura a fourth Athlete of the Week in her career.

WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Rheagan White, Fr., LeTourneau

LeTourneau freshman Rheagan White (Royse City, Texas) finished fourth in the Herm Wilson Invitational shot against NCAA Division I and II competitors. Her mark of 11.94 meters (39 ft.-2.25 in.) broke the school record and ranked 26th in the country.

EAST OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Chancey Davis, M, So., LeTourneau

LeTourneau sophomore midfielder Chancey Davis (Flower Mound, Texas) scored the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute of a 1-0 victory over Concordia Texas.

EAST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Eric Smith, D, Sr., LeTourneau

LeTourneau senior defender Eric Smith (Tucson, Ariz.) anchored the YellowJacket defense that shutout Concordia Texas 1-0. He played all 180 minutes in two games and limited the opponents to just eight shots on goal and two goals.

CO-WEST OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kiko Redondo, F, Jr., Hardin-Simmons

Hardin-Simmons junior forward Kiko Redondo (Coppell, Texas) scored the game-winner in the 103rd minute of a 1-0, double-overtime victory against Wayland Baptist. He took three shots, two on goal, in the game.

CO-WEST OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Patrick Roach, F, Jr., Mary Hardin-Baylor

Mary Hardin-Baylor junior forward Patrick Roach (Kingwood, Texas) helped the Cru to a 2-0 week, scoring the game-winner in a 1-0 victory at NCAA Division II powerhouse Midwestern State and adding to goals and an assist in a 5-4, double-overtime win against Ottawa (Ariz.). He ended the week with seven points on six shots on goal.

WEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Reid Applewhite, GK, Fr., Hardin-Simmons

Hardin-Simmons freshman goalkeeper Reid Applewhite (Prosper, Texas) made four saves in his collegiate debut during a 1-0, double-overtime shutout victory against Wayland Baptist.

Ozark’s junior midfielder Lorfils Milord (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) scored a goal in the Eagles’ 2-1 loss against Harding.

Defensive

Mary Hardin-Baylor sophomore goalkeeper Ethan Rimbey (Cypress, Texas) made two saves in the first half of a 1-0 win against Midwestern State. He then had one save and allowed two goals in the first period of a 5-4, double-overtime victory against Ottawa (Ariz.).

EAST DIVISION HITTER OF THE WEEK – Desiree Squires, 1B, Jr., Louisiana College

Louisiana College junior first baseman Desiree Squires (Rosepine, La.) hit .500 (4-for-8) with a run scored, three doubles, and six RBI in the Wildcats’ doubleheader sweep of Millsaps. She was 2-for-5 with two doubles and five driven in to help LC overcome a 6-0 deficit en route to an 8-6 victory. Squires then went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in an 8-5 win.

EAST DIVISION PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Bailey Richey, RHP, Jr., LeTourneau

LeTourneau junior right-handed hurler Bailey Richey (Humble, Texas) went the distance to pick up a 3-1 win over St. Thomas (Texas) in the YellowJackets’ season-opener. She allowed one run, four hits, and a pair of walks while striking out six. It is Richey’s third Pitcher of the Week award of her career.

WEST DIVISION HITTER OF THE WEEK – Alexis Sullivan, RF, Sr., Howard Payne

Howard Payne senior right fielder Alexis Sullivan (Brea, Calif.) opened the season hitting .667 (4-for-6) with four runs, a double, a home run, and four RBI in a split at Schreiner. She was 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, a double, and a homer in the 10-1 win against the Mountaineers. Sullivan had an RBI and a run scored in a 3-2 loss in the nightcap. It is Sullivan’s second career Hitter of the Week award.

WEST DIVISION PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Bailey Tisdale, LHP, So., Concordia Texas

Concordia Texas sophomore left-hander Bailey Tisdale (Santa Fe, Texas) took a perfect game into the fourth inning before allowing a walk and a hit in the Tornados’ 21-0 win against Austin. She threw five scoreless frames for the shutout, fanning ten batters.

OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES AT THE PLATE

Concordia Texas freshman outfielder Megan Hooper (Leander, Texas) went 3-for4 with a double, four RBI, and three runs scored in Austin’s doubleheader sweep. Game one, she was 1-for-1, hit by a pitch, scored twice, and knocked in three as the Tornados won 21-0. Hooper followed two hits, a run, and RBI in a 9-1 victory of game two. She was also 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts.

LeTourneau sophomore catcher Callie Poore (Whitney, Texas) hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the YellowJackets’ season-opening 3-1 win against St. Thomas (Texas). She then went 2-for-5 with a double and RBI in game two, hitting .375 (3-for-8) on the day.

UT Dallas freshman outfielder Ashely Ambrosy (Haslet, Texas) opened the 2021 season with a five-game hitting streak, hitting .588 (10-of-17) over the first week of the season. She went 4-for-7 at the plate in Saturday’s home-opening twinbill with Centenary (La.). Ambrosy then went 3-for-7 with a double in Sunday’s two games at Trinity and closed the week with a 3-for-3 performance in a road loss at No. 13 Mary Hardin-Baylor Monday.

Mary Hardin-Baylor freshman right fielder Izzy Gutierrez (Belton, Texas) helped the No. 13 Cru to a 2-1 record to open the 2021 season by hitting .444 (4-for-9) with a triple, home run, nine RBI, and five runs scored. She was 3-for-6 with three runs and RBI in a doubleheader split with Southwestern (Texas). Gutierrez slammed a home run and drove in four runs in a 12-4 victory against UT Dallas.

OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES IN THE CIRCLE

Mary Hardin-Baylor right-hander Camryn Rucker (Elkhart, Texas) went 1-0 in a pair of appearances to open the No. 13 Cru season. She had a 9-1, five-inning victory, allowing just one unearned run and three hits against Southwestern (Texas). Rucker then threw two innings against UT Dallas, surrendering one hit without allowing a walk.

Louisiana College freshman righty CeCe Pace (Crosby, Texas) earned a complete game 8-5 victory, allowing three earned runs and seven hits with two walks against Millsaps. 

Pineda, Brown, McClendon, Bowman Earn Women’s Soccer Players of the Week

EAST OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Amy Pineda, F, So., East Texas Baptist

East Texas Baptist sophomore forward Amy Pineda (Katy, Texas) scored two of the Tigers’ three goals, including the game-winner in the 108th minute, of a 3-2 double-overtime victory against Piedmont. She took five shots, three on goal in the game.

EAST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Skylar Brown, D, Jr., Ozarks

Ozark’s junior defender Skylar Brown (Maumelle, Ark.) fought off attacks from MUW by winning balls in the air and limiting the Owls to just three shots on goal in a 1-0 victory.

WEST OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Emily McClendon, M, Fr., Howard Payne

Howard Payne freshman midfielder Emily McClendon (Corpus Christi, Texas) scored a goal in the 85th minute of a 3-1 loss to Our Lady of the Lake.

WEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kylie Bowman, GK, Fr., Concordia Texas

Concordia Texas freshman goalkeeper Kylie Bowman (San Antonio, Texas) locked down the goal with five saves in a scoreless double-overtime tie at LeTourneau.

OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES

Defensive

LeTourneau sophomore goalkeeper Kiersten Reeser (Dover, Pa.) posted 0.73 goals against averaged and 14 saves as the YellowJackets went 0-2-1 on the week. She recorded seven saves in a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Concordia Texas. Reeser also had a scoreless first half with two saves in a 1-0 loss to LSU Shreveport and five saves in a 2-1 loss to Piedmont.

EAST DIVISION OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Skylar Fowler, RS, Jr., LeTourneau

LeTourneau junior right-side Skylar Fowler (Spring, Texas) hit .500 with 11 kills in the YellowJackets’ four-set victory over Hardin-Simmons. She only committed one error on 20 attacks and recorded two block assists.

EAST DIVISION DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Bailey O’Bannon, MB, Jr., East Texas Baptist

East Texas Baptist junior middle blocker Bailey O’Bannon (Redwater, Texas) helped the Tigers to a come-from-behind five-set victory over Hardin-Simmons, recording five blocks a 1.00 block per set average. She also hit .273 with five kills.

WEST DIVISION OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Alicia Becerra, OH, So., Hardin-Simmons

Hardin-Simmons sophomore outside hitter Alicia Becerra (Round Rock, Texas) averaged 3.11 kills and 3.33 digs per set while hitting .141 as the Cowgirls went 0-2 on the week. She had nine kills and eight digs in a five-set loss to East Texas Baptist and followed 19 kills, 22 digs in a four-set loss at LeTourneau.

WEST DIVISION DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Karlie Knapek, L, Sr., Hardin-Simmons

Hardin-Simmons senior libero Karlie Knapek (Hutto, Texas) averaged 5.22 digs per set in the Cowgirls’ pair of matches. She posted 18 digs in a five-set loss to East Texas Baptist and 29 digs in a four-set defeat at LeTourneau. Knapek also posted six assists and three aces.

Offensive

East Texas Baptist junior outside hitter Allie Fennell (Gilmer, Texas) hit .333 with nine kills and a pair of blocks in the Tigers’ five-set victory over Hardin-Simmons. 

Defensive

LeTourneau junior libero Courtney Edge (Carthage, Texas) recorded double-digit digs for the third straight match, coming up with 23 in a four-set win over Hardin-Simmons. She averaged 5.75 digs per set and also had three assists.
