Morrison, Sherman Earn Baseball Player of the Week Honors

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE BASEBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Games: February 23-28, 2021

HITTER OF THE WEEK – Luke Morrison, 3B, Jr., Ozarks 

Ozark’s junior third baseman Luke Morrison (Tucson, Ariz.), hit .666 (8-for-12) with a triple, eight RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base as the Eagles went 2-1 against Sul Ross State. He was 3-for-4 with four RBI in a 13-3 victory over the Lobos.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Jacob Sherman, RHP, Fr., East Texas Baptist

East Texas Baptist freshman right-hander Jacob Sherman (Weatherford, Texas) made two relief appearances and picked up two wins for the Tigers. He went three innings in a 9-0 win over LeTourneau, recording five strikeouts and one hit. Sherman also threw three scoreless frames against No. 21 Concordia Texas, allowing one hit and fanning three in a 7-2 victory over the Tornados.

OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES AT THE PLATE

Mary Hardin-Baylor’s sophomore shortstop Caimyn Holiday (Selma, Texas), batted .417 (5-for-12) in a three-game series against LeTourneau. Three of his five hits were doubles for a slugging percentage of .667. Holiday also recorded a run, RBI, and a walk.

Hardin-Simmons freshman third baseman Colin Ethridge (Rockwall, Texas) hit .556 (5-for-9) in a three-game series with Belhaven. He also had a double, home run, five RBI, and three runs scored.

Sul Ross State senior right fielder Jorge Marquez (Hebbronville, Texas) batted .500 (6-for-12) with a pair of doubles, a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored in a three-game series with Ozarks. He went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs, and RBI in the Lobos’ 11-10 win on Saturday.

Louisiana College junior catcher Ty Morgan (Ville Platte, La.) slug .917 with a .500 (6-for-12) average in the Wildcats’ three-game sweep of McMurry. He recorded three doubles, a triple, two RBI, and a run scored.

UT Dallas sophomore designated hitter Zac Vorst (Katy, Texas) was 6-for-10 from the plate with a double and a homer as the Comets took 2-of-3 games at Howard Payne over the weekend. In the Comets’ near record-setting 27-8 win over HPU in the series opener on Friday, Vorst was 2-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored, belting his first home run as a Comet. He was then 4-for-7 from the plate as the Comets split a doubleheader with HPU on Saturday.

LeTourneau freshman catcher Noah Arellano (Houston, Texas) homer in the first ASC series of their career to help the YellowJackets sweep Mary Hardin-Baylor. He recorded the game-winning RBI in a 10-7 non-conference win at East Texas Baptist. For the week, he hit .353 (6-for-17) with a game-winning home run, four RBI, and four runs scored as LeTourneau went 4-1.

Belhaven junior left fielder Evan Moore (Alpharetta, Ga.) hit .500 (7-for-14) with a double, home run, five RBI, and five runs scored as the Blazers took 2-of-3 from Hardin-Simmons.

Howard Payne sophomore Trevor Fletcher (Discovery Bay, Calif.) hit .400 (4-for-10) in three games for the Yellow Jackets. He was 3-for-5 with two RBI in a loss to No. 4 Trinity (Texas). He also hit a three-run, walk-off triple in the bottom of the ninth in a 4-3 win against UT Dallas.

East Texas Baptist junior shortstop Jake Miller (North Richland Hills, Texas) hit .308 (4-for-13), with all four hits being for extra bases (2 triples, 2 home runs) as the Tigers went 3-2 on the week. He drove in two runs and scored three times for a 1.177 slugging percentage. He hit a crucial solo home run in a 5-3 victory over No. 21 Concordia, Texas.

OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES ON THE MOUND

Mary Hardin-Baylor senior right-hander Jeb Zolman (Humble, Texas) struck out ten and allowed three hits in 5.1 innings in his season debut. He took a hard-luck 1-0 loss to LeTourneau, with the only run scored on a balk. Zolman held the YellowJackets to a .158 batting average.

Louisiana College junior righty Dylan Roark (St. Francisville, La.) fanned seven batters, allowing just one hit and a walk over six innings in the Wildcats’ 11-1 win at McMurry. He only allowed one unearned run in the game.

UT Dallas sophomore left-hander Ryan Vera (Friendswood, Texas) did not allow an earned run as he tossed the first 4.0 innings in the Comets’ 10-4 win over Howard Payne open UTD’s Saturday doubleheader with the Yellow Jackets. Vera allowed three unearned runs while limiting HPU to just four hits and striking out one in his start.

LeTourneau junior right-hander Raul Martinez (Tyler, Texas) struck out a career-high nine batters over five frames as the YellowJackets defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor 1-0. He allowed just four hits and three walks in the combined shutout.

Belhaven junior right-hander Brett Sanchez (Slidell, La.) improved to 3-0 on the year during a 17-2 win over Hardin-Simmons. He struck out nine batters and allowed four hits and an unearned run over seven innings.

Howard Payne junior righty Kyle Purdes (Houston, Texas) threw seven innings in a no-decision start against UT Dallas, striking out six and allowing one run on seven hits. For the week, he posted a 2.79 ERA and 10 Ks over 9.2 innings.

Ozark’s junior left-hander Blake Benson (Springdale, Ark.) tossed seven innings, allowing one run to give the Eagles a 9-1, season-opening win over Sul Ross State. He struck out three, walked one, and scattered eight hits.

Underwood, Johnson Claim Men’s Hoops Players of the Week

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

EAST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Dimitrius Underwood, Sr., G, UT Dallas

UT-Dallas junior guard Dimitrius Underwood (Mesquite, Texas) averaged 31.0 points, and 7.5 rebounds per game as the Comets split a pair of ASC games last week. Underwood scored a season-high 34 points thanks to a 19-of-22 performance from the foul line on Wednesday as the Comets held off Ozarks 79-75 at home. He added 11 rebounds for his 34th career double-double. Underwood followed up with 28 points on 11-of-21 shooting, adding four rebounds and seven assists, Saturday in an 81-76 loss at Ozarks. It is Underwood’s fourth Player of the Week of the season and the 12th of his career.

WEST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Josiah Johnson, So., G, Mary Hardin-Baylor

Mary Hardin-Baylor sophomore guard Josiah Johnson (Big Sandy, Texas) tied the Cru scoring record with 53 points. He tied the ASC record with 21 field goals made in a 105-76 win over Concordia Texas Saturday. In two wins over the Tornados, he averaged 40.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 6.0 steals per game while shooting 59 percent (29-of-49). Johnson tied the ASC record set by Nate West of LeTourneau with his seven Player of the Year award.

EAST DIVISION 

Louisiana College junior center Galen Smith, Jr. (Bay St. Louis, Miss.) posted 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting and pulled down 14 rebounds in the Wildcats’ 86-75 win at Belhaven.

Ozarks senior guard Bryson Johnson (Katy, Texas) averaged 26.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game as the Eagles split with UT Dallas. He exploded for a career-high 37 points behind five three-pointers and 13 field goals in a loss in Richardson. He shot 52 percent from the Eagles’ home win field, going 5-of-8 from the field.

Belhaven sophomore guard Luke Couch (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) averaged 26.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists as the Blazers went 1-1. He also shot 90.9 percent (20-of-22) at the free-throw line. Couch recorded 36 points and eight boards in a non-conference 90-78 win over MUW.

East Texas Baptist junior forward Charlie Cochran (Louisville, Ky.) recorded a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds in a 75-66 win against Jarvis Christian.

WEST DIVISION

McMurry junior guard Remy Minor (Houston, Texas) had 23 points and six assists in a near-upset of Hardin-Simmons Saturday. He went 4-of-9 from behind the arc. In the two losses against the Cowboys, Minor averaged 15.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 2.0 steals per game.

Howard Pane freshman guard Michael House (Killeen, Texas) led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points to go with six rebounds and an assist in a loss to Sul Ross State.

Hardin-Simmons junior forward Steven Quinn (Dallas, Texas) averaged 14.0 points, and 3.3 rebounds per game as the Cowboys went 3-0 on the week.

Sul Ross State senior guard Tristen Licon (El Paso, Texas) had 19 points, eight rebounds, and three steals in the Lobos 88-60 win over Howard Payne.

Solis, Carruth, Luera, Campos Earn Softball Weekly Honors

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE SOFTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Games: February 23-27, 2021

EAST DIVISION HITTER OF THE WEEK – Daniella Solis, LF, Sr., East Texas Baptist

East Texas Baptist senior left fielder Daniella Solis (Baytown, Texas) hit .400 (4-for-10) with a double, a home run, and seven driven in as the No. 1 Tigers swept Concordia Texas in a three-game set. In ETBU’s 8-3 win, she recorded three RBI and followed with four RBI, a home run, and was 2-of-3 in a 7-0 victory.

EAST DIVISION PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Kennedy Carruth, RHP, So., Belhaven

Belhaven sophomore right-handed hurler Kennedy Carruth (St. Francisville, La.) earned her second straight Pitcher of the Week by throwing two complete-game victories and making a save. She gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out three in the Blazers 8-0 win over No. 18 Birmingham-Southern. Carruth then struck out 12, giving up only one hit, a walk, and an unearned run in a 3-1 victory over Hardin-Simmons. She then earned a save, striking out two in the top of the seventh of a 1-0 win over the Cowgirls.

WEST DIVISION HITTER OF THE WEEK – Aurora Luera, SS, Sr., Howard Payne

Howard Payne senior shortstop Aurora Luera (Slaton, Texas) helped the Yellow Jackets go 4-1 on the week, hitting .450 (9-for-20) with four runs, a double, and a triple. She was 4-for-4 with a run and a triple in the 7-3 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God.

WEST DIVISION PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Tia Campos, RHP, Jr., Howard Payne

Howard Payne junior righty Tia Campos (Winters, Texas) went 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA, striking out ten and allowing 13 hits and one walk over 14 frames. She fanned eight in a 7-3 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God. Campos followed two strikeouts and just five hits allowed in a 4-0 shutout of UT Dallas.

OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES AT THE PLATE

Louisiana College sophomore right fielder Kayla Dauthier (Jarreau, La.) hit .400 (6-for-15) with four RBI and a run scored as the Wildcats went 1-4 week.

Sul Ross State junior shortstop Annika Canaba (Alpine, Texas) started the 2021 season going 2-for-5 with two home runs, five RBI, and three runs scored in a 17-4 win at Ozarks. In the pair of wins over the Eagles, she hit .375 (3-for-8) with six RBI and a 1.125 slugging percentage.

UT Dallas freshman right fielder Ashely Ambrosy (Haslet, Texas) was 8-for-11 from the plate, hitting .727 in the Comets’ three-game home series with Howard Payne over the weekend. Ambrosy was 5-for-8 in Friday’s doubleheader with HPU, accounting for five of the Comets’ eight hits in the twin bill. She was then 3-for-4 with a run scored in UTD’s 2-0 win over the Yellow Jackets, the Comets’ first win of the season.

Belhaven freshman shortstop Cade Bass (Milledgeville, Ga.) helped the Blazers to a perfect 5-0 record, including a doubleheader sweep over No. 18 Birmingham-Southern. She hit .454 (5-for-11) with a home run, five RBI, and four runs scored.

Mary Hardin-Baylor freshman third baseman/outfielder Bailey Eggleston (Spring, Texas) hit .522 (12-of-23) in seven games last week. She recorded a hit in every game and had four multiple-hit contests. Eggeleston slammed two double and a home run for four runs scored and four RBI to go with two steals.

OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES IN THE CIRCLE

Louisiana College sophomore right-hander Olivia Coaker (Orange Beach, Ala.) went 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA in three appearances over 10.1 innings. She cruised to a 12-2 win over McMurry, allowing just five hits over five frames.

Sul Ross State junior pitcher Jodie Vaughn (Andrews, Texas) went seven innings, allowing four runs, seven hits, and three walks while striking out 11 in the Lobos’ 17-4 win at Ozarks.

UT Dallas junior right-hander Devyn Yanello (Houston, Texas) went 1-1 with a 1.00 earned run average in two starts over the weekend against Howard Payne. In Sunday’s 2-0 win over the Yellow Jackets, Yanello limited HPU to seven without a walk as she pitched a complete-game shutout in the Comets’ first victory of the season.

East Texas Baptist junior right-hander Presyle Cox (Rusk, Texas) recorded nine strikeouts while allowing one run and to hits over seven innings of a 4-1 victory against Concordia Texas.

Johnson, Hampton Earn Women’s Basketball Players of the Week

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

EAST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Destiny Johnson, C, Sr., Belhaven

Belhaven senior center Destiny Johnson (Memphis, Tenn.) recorded two double-doubles to lead the Blazers to a 2-0 record. She started with 18 points and 14 boards in an 82-73 win over Louisiana College and followed 12 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks in a 101-49 victory against MUW. She shot 52 percent (12-of-23) for the week.

WEST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Vania Hampton, F, So., Sul Ross State

Sul Ross State sophomore forward Vania Hampton (Austin, Texas) earned her fourth Player of the Week of the season as she scored a career-high 30 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in a 76-65 conference win over Howard Payne. She followed nine points, 15 boards, and four assists in a non-conference loss to the Lady Jackets. For the week, Hampton averaged 19.5 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from the field, 4-for-5 from three-point range, and 11-for-12 at the line.

EAST DIVISION

Louisiana College sophomore forward Alex Harrison (Oakdale, La.) had a career-high 29 points with nine rebounds in the Wildcats’ 82-75 loss at Belhaven.

UT Dallas senior guard Raenett Hughes (College Station, Texas) became the Comets’ all-time leading scorer last week as she sparked her squad to a pair of wins over Ozarks in ASC East play. Hughes scored 18 points Wednesday in a 62-40 home win over Ozarks, moving her into a tie for the Comets’ top-scoring spot, matching former teammate Victoria Pena (2016-20). Hughes then added 14 points Saturday in an 81-63 road win over the Eagles to take over sole possession of the record, now with 1,522 career points over her four-year career at UTD.

Ozark’s sophomore guard Faith Curry (Harbour Island, Bahamas) averaged 13.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in a pair of losses to No. 9 UT Dallas.

East Texas Baptist senior guard Mallory Stephens (Keene, Texas) averaged 16.5 points, 4.5 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game as the No. 2 Tigers took two games from LeTourneau. She poured in a career-high 21 points in 23 minutes in the first game, then had 12 points in game two, helping ETBU remain undefeated and claim the ASC East Division regular-season title. Stephens shot 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the field and 4-for-5 from the three-point range.

 

WEST DIVISION

Mary Hardin-Baylor senior center Taylor Kollmorgen (Houston, Texas) averaged 11.5 points and 12.0 rebounds per game to lead the Cru to a pair of wins over Concordia Texas. She shot 67 percent (8-of-12) from the field and 88 percent (7-of-7) from the line. Kollmorgen pulled a season-best 18 rebounds in Saturday’s victory.

Hardin-Simmons sophomore guard Brittany Schnabel (Millsap, Texas) led the Cowgirls to a 3-0 week, including securing the ASC West Division regular-season title from the point guard spot. She averaged 13.3 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per game.

Howard Payne senior guard Chelsey Harris (Waco, Texas) averaged 17.0 points, and 5.5 rebounds per game as the Yellow Jackets split with Sul Ross State.

McMurry sophomore forward Destinty Mathews (Palestine, Texas) recorded season-highs with 23 points and 15 rebounds in a loss at Hardin-Simmons Thursday. For the week, she averaged 15.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in two contests against the No. 8 Cowgirls.
