Bicycle Helmet Giveaway Planned for Saturday, May 14
KILGORE, TX (May 12, 2016) – In anticipation of area children being out of school for the summer and spending time on their bicycles, Good Shepherd Emergency Center – Kilgore, is hosting “Hard Hats for Little Heads.” The event is in conjunction with Texas Medical Association. It is a bicycle safety event – Saturday (May 14) from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Kilgore City Park’s large pavilion.

They will provide free bike helmets to children ages five and older. Representatives will be on hand to ensure proper fitting and explain the importance of wearing a helmet. Wearing a bicycle helmet can prevent almost 85 percent of head injuries, but less than half of all kids ages 5 to 14 wear a helmet, according to the Texas Medical Association (TMA). And of the children who do wear helmets, only about one-third wear them correctly, says the TMA.

“We look forward to helping children remain safe as they enjoy summer outdoor activities,” said Cindy Campbell, clinical director for Good Shepherd Emergency Center – Kilgore. “This is an excellent opportunity to promote safety, as head injuries are the most severe type of harm for bicyclists.”

The helmet giveaway is also designed to benefit children who enjoy skateboarding, in-line skating and riding scooters. Supplies are limited and children must be present to receive a helmet. Kids can also enter for a chance to win a free bicycle.
