Child Car Safety Event At Givens Huge Success

Parents and caregivers had their children’s safety seats checked at a free event at T.G. Givens Early Childhood Center conducted by the Texas Department of Transportation. TxDOT is trying to save lives through proper use of safety seats and reminds all Texans that properly restraining children while riding in vehicles is a responsibility and it’s also the law.

TxDOT educates parents and caregivers in Texas about the importance of buckling their child into the correct car seat for their age and size.

Monica Yates from the Behavioral Traffic Safety Section/Traffic Safety Division considered the event a huge success. Of the vehicles checked, no car seat was installed correctly. Six students did not use a car seat and a total of ten new seats were issued to parents.

“According to research data, the proper use of child safety seats reduces the risk of injury and death leading to reduced medical costs, avoidance of lost future earnings, and improved quality of life. Economic benefits for new seats with an assumed 75% continued use are estimated at $2,159 per child age 0 to 4 and $2,606 per child age 4 to 7. Based on this data, the economic impact for this event is $20,772,” said Yates.
