Chisum Nabs State Title Plus Mavs and Stars Victorious in Today’s Sports

Paris – The Chisum Mustangs are now home to a high school state championship, thanks to senior power lifter Alexis Tackett. With combine weight from her bench press, squat and dead lift, Tackett totaled 1,245 pounds to take home the state title in girls power lifting in class 3A. North Lamar’s Kayedon Oliver finished in 4th place at the state meet in class 4A.

Meanwhile, five red river valley boys basketball players have been named all-region selections. Including seniors Levi Porter of North Lamar and Devynn Sloan of Rivercrest. Seniors Jordan and Jared Embry of Paris high and Junior Clashon Gaffney of Clarksville were selected to the High School basketball All-State Team in their respective classification.

MP – High school baseball and softball picked back up over the weekend. The Mt Pleasant Lady Tigers stay perfect in 15-5A with a 5-4 win over the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats. With the win Mt. Pleasant Softball improves to 10-6-3 overall and 4-0 in district play. A tough test awaits tomorrow when they face Hallsville on the road. First pitch is scheduled for 6pm.

Meanwhile, in a battle of local teams the Mt. Vernon Lady Tigers edge out Paul Pewitt 6-5. with the win Mt. Vernon improves to 13-11 overall and 2-2 in district play. Next up, Mt. Vernon Tiger baseball and Lady Tiger softball will host the Chapel Hill Red Devils and Lady Devils tomorrow evening.

SS – High school baseball and softball picked back up over the weekend. The Sulphur Springs Wildcats throttle the Mt. Pleasant Tigers 12-2. The win gives Sulphur Springs baseball a 1-1 record in district play. The Lady Cats had their hot start to district play cooled off with a 5-4 loss to interstate 30 rival Mt. Pleasant. With the loss the Lady Cats fall to 3-1 in district play, tied for 3rd place with Pine Tree.

Last night in the NBA the Dallas Mavericks pick up a big win 132-120 in overtime. At age 37, Dirk dropped in 40 points, the oldest player in the NBA to score 40 in a game since Karl Malone 15 years ago. With the win the Mavs are 35-35 on the season and are tied with Houston for the 7 seed in the Western Conference.

The Dallas Stars scored an impressive 3-0 shutout victory on Saturday against the Islanders. As of this morning the Stars lead the western conference with 95 points and return to the ice tomorrow night against division rival Chicago at 7:30.

And March Madness is living up to it’s name. Last night the Texas A&M Aggies shocked Northern Iowa 92-88 in double overtime. The Aggies trailed by 12 with under 40 second remaining in regulation, but a 14-2 run would send the game to overtime, where Texas A&M would ultimately advance. The Sweet 16 begins today.
