Clinton Global Initiative University selects Jarvis Christian College for semifinal competition

Hawkins, TX – Jarvis Christian College students’ “Head Start to 1000 Healthy Hearts” project has been chosen as a semifinalist by the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU) for the Resolution Social Venture Challenge. The students will present their project before a panel of judges between April 1 and April 3 on the campus of UC Berkeley.

The Jarvis Christian College project included three initiatives:
· Nutrition – imparts knowledge and skills needed to establish healthy cooking and eating habits to fight childhood hunger and obesity;

· Smart Food Budgeting and Shopping – teaches children and adults how to shop sensibly on a limited budget;

· Food Preparation – teaches children how to prepare healthy meals and snacks and to make smart choices wherever they are (school, home, out to eat).

Jarvis Christian College’s project focuses on public health, one of the five priority areas for the Clinton Global Initiative. The three students that comprise the Jarvis Christian College team and adviser are Cedrick Billington, Winona, Texas; Daniel Terrell, Fort Worth, Texas; and Cheston Living, Marshall, Texas. Chestley Talley is the JCC Campus adviser.
Jarvis Christian College was selected from over 100 institutions to make it to the semifinals. For more information on the project, go online to www.1000healthyhearts.com.

Dr. Lester C. Newman, President of Jarvis Christian College, made the following comments regarding JCC students and the Clinton Global Initiative: “We are very pleased that our students are competitive among their peers. They have truly refined their leadership skills and are proudly displaying them in various settings. More importantly, we feel that it is essential that our next generation of leaders are willing and prepared to address the ever-changing landscape of challenges — locally, nationally and globally. Mr. Talley has done an excellent job preparing this group of students for those challenges.”
