Area high school football teams are ten days away from the start of two-a-day practices. Teams will have a week and a half’s worth of practice days before their first scrimmages on August 18. The regular season begins with week one on September 1. The Daingerfield Tigers and Hughes Springs Mustangs open the season on Thursday, August 31.
The Texas Rangers open a weekend series with the Baltimore Orioles as the trade deadline approaches. The L-A Dodgers, New York Yankees and Houston Astros have all inquired about starting pitcher, Yu Darvish. The Rangers have also put relief pitcher, Jeremy Jeffress, on the trading block. Texas currently sits 4.5 games out of a wildcard spot in the American League. First pitch tonight between the Rangers and Orioles [on KPLT 1490am and 96.3fm] is set for 7:05.
The Dallas Cowboys completed the second day of padded practice yesterday at training camp in Oxnard, California. The injury bug nipped the ‘boys when rookie first round pick, Taco Charleton, left with a shoulder injury. Rookie fourth rounder, Ryan Switzer, suffered a mild hamstring pull and defensive tackle, Malik Collins sat out yesterday with a hip flexor injury. None are expected to be serious. The Cowboys have the day off today and return to the practice field tomorrow at 3:45 Pacific Time.
And USC Trojans head football coach, Clay Helton, says Heisman Trophy winner, O.J. Simpson, won’t be welcome to the Southern Cal campus after he’s released from prison in October. Simpson was granted parole after serving nine years for armed robbery.
