Delta County Traffic Stop Leads To Theft Arrests

PRESS RELEASE  FROM DELTA COUNTY   SHERIFF CHARLA SINGLETON
A late morning traffic stop leads to a recovery of a trailer, an electric golf cart and 3 arrests. Just before 11 am on Thursday, January 26, 2023, Sergeant Roden stopped a vehicle towing a trailer with no license plate displayed. At the time, a check of the vin for the trailer did not show it to be stolen. The driver identified as 47-year-old Pecan Gap resident Jerry Lee Sessums was cited and released. A subsequent check of the owner registration came back to a person that had been deceased. Through her diligent efforts, Sergeant Roden was able to make contact with the deceased persons’ son and was able to determine that the trailer had been stolen from a property in Delta County.
A warrant for Theft of Property for over $750 but less than $2500 was issued for Mr. Sessums. Just after 2pm on that same date, Mr. Sessums was arrested after a subsequent traffic stop. Mr. Sessums was still in possession of the trailer at the time of the stop. 35-year-old, Pecan Gap resident, Samantha Peasley was also arrested and charged with Theft of Property over $750 but less than $2500.
Deputies then conducted a consent to search of Mr. Sessums property where a stolen electric golf cart, an agriculture sprayer and a battery charger were also recovered. On the property, deputies made contact with 49-year-old, Texarkana resident Stacy Dewayne Smith. Mr. Smith was arrested for a Hunt County Felony Warrant for Failure to Identify Fugitive from Justice and a Bowie County Felony Warrant for Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 with over 1 gram but less than 4 grams.
Ms. Peasley has bonded out on a $2,500 bond for the Theft of Property charge. Mr. Sessums is still in custody awaiting trial and Mr. Smith is still in custody awaiting transport.
We would like to commend Sgt Roden and Investigator Hastings for their due diligence and efforts in this case. The investigation on this case continues at this time.
