Mt Vernon Native Signing Book

Mt Vernon Native Signing Book on June 16

Mt Vernon native Wendel Sloan will sign copies of his book, “Kill a Moose for Jesus: Three-Minute Essays on Punks, Poets, Parents, Preachers, Potheads, Parrotheads and Politicians,” from 2:00 until 4:00 pm Saturday (Jun 16) at Trey-Deuce Domino Saloon at 4450 County Road SW 3010 south of Mt Vernon off of Highway 37. For directions, you can call 903-767-9236.

Pictured in a humorous hunting outfit on the cover is Mt Vernon resident Ron Barker. The book’s title comes from a song he wrote about a church fundraiser in which members killed wild game for a community potluck.

The 105 essays alternate between humorous and serious, and you can read each in three minutes or less. Numerous color and black and white photos illustrate the pieces.

Many essays center around Mt Vernon or East Texas, with many people from Mt Vernon being mentioned or pictured in the 182-page book.

Published by Scopecraeft Press, the 8 ½ X 10 ½ book with a glossy color cover retails for $9.95 (add $4.05 for a total of $14 if shipped).

In 2017, Sloan won a national award from the National Federation of Press Women in the “Humorous Columns” category for the title essay and “Hairy Experience for a Bald Guy” in the book.

For more information about the book signing, email Sloan at wendel.sloan@yahoo.com or Barker at ronbarker057@gmail.com.
