Red River County Genealogical Society

The Red River County Genealogical Society’s May meeting will be held on Monday (May 13) at 7:00 p.m. at the Red River County Chamber of Commerce meeting room. The speaker will be Gwen Takes Horse. Gwen, who is of Choctaw and Chickasaw descent, has been one-half of the Genealogy Department at Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma for over six years. Before working in Genealogy, she was a Counselor for the Choctaw Nation Upward Bound Program for 14 years. A graduate of Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma, she has a Master of Behavioral Science in Counseling Psychology. Gwen is a member of the Oklahoma Genealogical Society and the National Genealogical Society. The subject of the program will be, “Searching for Laurie’s Elusive Choctaw Princess” Many people who contact the Choctaw Nation Genealogy Department claim to have a “Choctaw Princess” in their past. While searching for Laurie’s Choctaw Princess, this presentation will be a quick history of the Choctaw Tribe from the Removal in Mississippi to the Lands West of Arkansas to The Final Rolls of Citizens and Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes. All interested persons are encouraged to attend.
