United Way’s “Day of Action”

(PARIS, Texas) — United Way of Lamar County is joining United Ways across the world by participating in the Day of Action. The Day of Action is an annual event that mobilizes the caring power of volunteers to create positive change in their communities. Last year’s event included 450 United Ways in 19 countries worldwide.

This year’s local event will be at the New Hope Center, 450 4th Street SW, on Saturday (Jun 9) from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. Volunteers will be needed that day to help paint and set up four new rooms for the homeless shelter, a workout room, a craft room, a library and a game room.

The dedication of the game room is in the memory of Cate Pearl, and her family and friends will be taking care of that area.

Tanteta Scott, Executive Director of New Hope, said “The Day of Action is when the community comes together to make an impact to those in need and make a real difference. By doing this, there are about 200 people annually who will benefit.”

Donations for the rooms are welcome. For the workout room exercise equipment like treadmills, stair-masters and stationary bikes are welcome, no free weights. Ms. Scott explains, “This workout room will promote family time, reduce stress, offer serenity and impact the resident’s overall health.”

In the craft room, they are in need of craft items and supplies, folding tables and chairs, plastic bins and wire racks. Also, New Hope is looking for volunteers in the summer who would like to do craft projects with the children.

Finally, in the library, they have an Eagle Scout building a bookcase, but they will need children’s books as well as faith-based and self-help books for adults. They would also like a donated reading chair.

Jenny Wilson, Executive Director of the United Way of Lamar County, stated “We hope that the community will get behind our Day of Action. Whether it is donating items or coming out on Saturday (Jun 9) to volunteer, it is a great and easy way to give back.”
