First Official “Juneteenth” National Holiday

Today is a national holiday, celebrating Juneteenth, when the last enslaved learned of their freedom on Galveston Island. Last year it became the eleventh federal holiday after a bipartisan push led by Republican Senator John Cornyn. He says it’s vital that all Americans understand our history, even the bad parts that include slavery. As a result, all federal and state agencies will be closed today. There is no mail today, and most banks are closed.
