An 11th-hour agreement averted a freight railroad strike last month. The third largest railroad workers union has voted against ratifying a proposed deal. Baylor University Operations and Supply Chain Management Professor Pedro Reyes says no rail service would put thousands more trucks on the road. And gasoline would be one of the first things to get more expensive. Some fuel components can only ship by rail, and diesel would spike due to high demand. He notes Texas has more rail lines than any other state. It is because many items from Mexico have to go through the Lone Star State.
