Friday’s High School Results Plus Pats World Champs

Paris – It was a Lamar County sweep in boys high school basketball this weekend. The 15th ranked Paris Wildcats demolish Pleasant Grove 97-66 and lock up a playoff spot. North Lamar pulled away in the 4th quarter to beat Atlanta 54-38, while the Pantherette’s are post-season bound after beating the Lady Rabbits 45-18. The Chisum Mustangs will also be in the playoffs after beating Winnsboro 66-63. And Prairiland sweeps Como-Pickton, 65-36 on the boys side and 53-26 to give the Lady Patriots a playoff spot. The 4th ranked Clarksville Tigers win over Detroit 93-30.

Mount Pleasant – As the playoffs creep closer, area basketball teams continue their success in district play. The Mt. Pleasant Tigers improve their perfect record in 16-5A to 10-0 after a win on the road over Texas High 64-52. The Mt. Pleasant Lady Tigers edge out the Texas High Lady Tigers 45-43. The win sets up a showdown for district supremacy with Sulphur Springs tomorrow night. And in a pair of exciting games, the Mt. Vernon Tigers and Lady Tigers sweep Chapel Hill. 57-53 on the boys side. The Mt. Vernon girls won over the Lady Devils 44-37.

Sulphur Springs – As the playoffs creep closer, area basketball teams continue their success in district play. The Mt. Vernon Tigers and Lady Tigers won huge games over Chapel Hill. With a 57-53 win, the Mt. Vernon boys draw even with the Red Devils at the top of the district 13-3A Standings. The Purple Lady Tigers, meanwhile, are the outright district champions after a 44-37 win over the Chapel Hill Lady Devils. The Commerce Tigers dismantle Whitewright, 93-55, to stay perfect in 10-3A and Saltillo wins a big game over Miller Grove 41-37.

The Dallas Mavericks continue their sudden winning ways Friday night, beating Portland 108-104. Mavs point guard Yogi Ferrell, who’s set to sign a two year contract this week, dropped in a career high 32 points and added five assists. Dallas is now two games out of playoff spot in the Western Conference.

And the New England Patriots win what may go down as the most historic game ever in the NFL, beating Atlanta 34-28 in the first overtime game in Super Bowl history. After trailing the Falcons 28-3, it’s the biggest come from behind win in Super Bowl history. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick have won a record five Super Bowls as quarterback and coach. Brady set Super Bowl records for passing yards with 466, completions with 43, and attempts with 62. Brady also threw his NFL record 31st playoff interception in the first half.
