Friday’s Sports

STADIUMS

While the NBA season tips-off in just a few weeks, the nation’s top infectious disease expert says, it’s unlikely teams will be able to have packed arenas filled with fans cheering them on during the upcoming season. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease Director, said that full-capacity crowds at arenas and stadiums would be among “the last things that you’re going to see” as the U.S. works toward ending the pandemic in 2021.

NCAA

No spectators will be allowed at the Rose Bowl for the College Football Playoff semifinal on Jan 1 because of COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the state, county, and city of Pasadena. The Tournament of Roses said Thursday that it requested special permission to allow for a limited number of spectators or a select number of guests of players and coaches at the 90,888-seat stadium, but they denied the request.

LSC

While fans will not attend A&M-Commerce Lion’s games in the Field House to start the season, all regular-season games will be streamed on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network with a new hybrid pricing model, some new one-season options, which we will announce next week. In addition to live and archived streaming options, which we will offer, viewers will have the opportunity to purchase and download games from the 2020-21 season for $10 each.

HIGH SCHOOL

In South Texas, Edinburg Police escorted senior high school football player Emmanuel Duron off the field after he left the bench and tackled a referee. Video shows the player rushing onto the field and bringing the ref to the ground at Richard R. Flores Stadium. It is unclear if the player is facing charges, but trainers helped the referee who had concussion symptoms.
