Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday rejected calls from Democrats for immediate votes on new gun safety measures in the wake of recent mass shootings in El Paso and Odessa. The state legislature doesn’t meet again until 2021, and any new gun control legislation before that would have to come in an emergency session.
