Harvey Update for Wednesday August 30

After five days of torrential rain, the latest weather forecast predicts less than an inch of rain and perhaps even sunshine for the Houston area. However, the dangers remain far from over. Authorities and family members have reported at least 30 deaths from Harvey, while law enforcement agencies say more than 13,000 people have been rescued in the Houston area and surrounding parts of Southeast Texas. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner also implemented a curfew of midnight to 5:00 am.

The Houston police officer who drowned in flood waters over the weekend has been identified as 60-year-old Sergeant Steve Perez. He was in his patrol car driving to work Sunday morning when he got trapped in his patrol car in high water. His body was recovered Tuesday morning. Sgt. Perez was a 34 year veteran of the Houston PD.

A Pentagon official says the military’s contribution to Harvey rescue and recovery efforts could soon increase by tenfold or more. The Texas guard number could rise to 8,000 to 10,000 in coming days, possibly joined by 20,000 to 30,000 from other states.

Kim Kardashian West and her famous siblings are donating $500,000 to help Harvey victims. The reality TV star and her mother and sisters have given $250,000 to the Red Cross and $250,000 to the Salvation Army.

NAACP  officials say  the organization will carefully monitor government assistance in Houston and other areas to ensure minority neighborhoods get adequate resources following Harvey’s destruction in the Gulf Coast. The NAACP’s goal will be “to ensure that resources directed from the federal government don’t skip neighborhoods.”
