High School Baseball and Softball Plus NCAA Tourney Action

Paris – area schools gathered yesterday evening at Wildcat Stadium for the Deon Minor Relays. At least two meet records were set by local athletes. Ty Grey of Paris high set the mark in the 300 meter Hurdles with a time of 40.2 seconds. While Wesley Culbertson of North Lamar cleared 13 feet in the pole vault.

In district play in high school baseball and softball the Paris Wildcats will begin on the road against the Liberty Eylau Leopards. The North Lamar Panthers and Pantherettes will be on the diamond at Atlanta. All three games are set for 6pm. The Prairiland Patriots and Lady Patriots travel to take on Hooks. And the Chisum Mustangs and Lady Mustangs will be on the road at Cooper. With baseball starting at 2pm. The Lady Mustangs and Doggettes begin at 4:30.

MP – In high school baseball and softball the Mt. Pleasant Tigers fall to Pine Tree 6-0. They’ll take on Newman Smith in Carrollton tomorrow at 2pm. The Lady Tigers improve to 5-1 following their 4-2 victory last night over Pine Tree. The Lady Tigers are currently in 2nd place in the district. The Pittsburg Pirates and Lady Pirates face tough challenges at home against Pleasant Grove.

And results for the Mt. Pleasant Tigers from the Deon Minor Relays in Paris. Tre Holloman finished 2nd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.6, while Buddy McGill, Trey Hargrave, Hugo Valdez, Giovanni Rocha as well as the 4×100 relay team all grabbed 3rd place finishes.

SS – In high school baseball and softball the Sulphur Springs Wildcats and Lady Cats fall to Hallsville. Sulphur Springs baseball dropped their contest 6-1, while the softball team fell 11-0. The Winnsboro Red Raiders suffer a 2-1 loss in 8 innings to Grand Saline. The Lady Raiders will be in action this afternoon on the road at Grand Saline at 4:30. The Cooper Bulldogs and Dogette’s will host Chisum this afternoon beginning at 2 pm with the boys. First pitch for the softball game is at 4:30.

And in college softball the Texas A&M Commerce Lady Lions look to snap a three game losing skid when they play a pair of weekend double headers against Texas Women’s University in Denton. The first two games are today at 5 and 7 followed by tomorrow afternoon at 1 and 3.

Last night in the NHL the Dallas Stars fall to Arizona 3-1. Ales Hemsky netted the loan goal. Despite the loss the Stars remain at the top of the western conference with 97 points. They’ll play San Jose tomorrow afternoon at 3pm.

Tonight the Dallas Mavericks hit the road to take on the Golden State Warriors. The Mavs are 35-36 on the season and currently 7th in the western conference. Golden State is on a historic run at 64-7 overall and 33-0 at home. Tip off tonight is set for 9:30.

And the NCAA tournament sweet 16 round began last night. Oklahoma took down Texas A&M 77-63. Villanova knocks out Miami 92-69. Kansas beats Maryland 79-63. And Oregon defeats Duke 82-68. Tonight Virginia will face Iowa State at 6:10. Notre Dame plays Wisconsin at 6:27. Syracuse tips off against Gonzaga at 8:40. And North Carolina is up against Indiana at 8:57.
