High School Basketball Results Plus Cowboys Send Five to Pro Bowl

Paris – Red River Valley basketball teams may be on break from school, but the work on the hardwood continues. The Chisum Mustangs begin district play with a 46-35 win over Como Pickton. The Lady Mustangs won 60-38 over Como, improving to 1-1. The North Lamar Panthers pick up a win over Bonham 50-28. Menderez Gray led all scorers with 20 points. The Prairiland Patriots and Lady Patriots suffered a sweep at the hands of Chapel Hill, 63-43 in the boys game while the girls fall 72-34.

Mount Pleasant – Area basketball teams may be on break from school, but the work on the hardwood continues. The Mt. Pleasant Tigers begin district 16-5A competition with a road win over Hallsville 54-39. The Tigers have the Christmas weekend off and return to the court at the Paris Holiday Tournament next week. The 7th ranked Chapel Hill Lady Devils improve to 3-0 in district with a 72-34 win over previously unbeaten Prairiland. The Chapel Hill varsity boys followed up with a win in their district opener 63-43.

Sulphur Springs – The Sulphur Springs Wildcats begin district play with a victory on the road last night over the Pine Tree Pirates 69-65. Sulphur Springs is 14-2 overall on the season. The Sulphur Springs girls beat the Lady Pirates on Monday to earn a 3-0 district mark. 18th ranked Mt. Vernon remains unbeaten, winning over Cooper Monday night, 88-31 in their first district ball game, while the 6th ranked Lady Tigers won 73-39, improving to 2-0 in district and 15-3 overall.

Last night the Dallas Stars fall again in overtime 3-2 at the hands of the St. Louis Blues. Patrick Eaves and Jason Spezza netted the pair of goals for the Stars, but it was David Perron sealing the deal for the Blues, giving Dallas their 7th OT loss of the year. The Stars have 33 points on the season, for 6th place in the Central Division Standings.

College football bowl season continued with Western Kentucky beating Memphis … in the Boca Raton Bowl. Tonight, BYU is up against Wyoming in the Poinsettia Bowl. Kickoff is set for 8pm.

And NFL pro-bowlers were announced last night. The Dallas Cowboys landed five selections including rookies Dak Prescott and Zeke Elliott. Joining them will be the wall up front. Left tackle, Tyron Smith is selected for the forth time, while Center Travis Frederick and Guard Zack Martin are each making their third pro-bowl. Despite being 2nd in the NFL with 140 tackles on the season and finishing 2nd in the fan voting, linebacker Sean Lee, was not selected.
