High School Hoops Results Plus Big NFL Trade

 

High school basketball teams were in action last night for district play.
Paris – The Chisum Mustangs capture an epic win at home over the Prairiland Patriots, 52-51 in overtime. It was a big day for the North Lamar Panthers as they take down the Paris Wildcats, 31-22. The Panthers pulled even with the Wildcats in the district standings at 4-2. Tuesday morning North Lamar football learned punter, Travis Coston, was selected to the 2017 Class 4A All-State team. On the season, Coston averaged 43 yards per punt with a long of 68 yards. Meanwhile, the Rivercrest Rebels take down Simms Bowie, 77-29 and Wolfe City defeats Honey Grove, 50-45.
Mount Pleasant – The Mt Pleasant Tiger hold off a stingy Marshall Maverick team for a 71-68 victory. The win puts Mt Pleasant at 8-1 on the district season. Meanwhile, the Sulphur Springs Wildcats suffer an upset loss at the hands of Texas High, 77-66, opening the door for the Tigers to aim for an outright district title. The Mt Vernon Tigers and Lady Tigers sweep Winnsboro first with the Lady Tigers edging out the Lady Raiders, 52-46, followed by the Mt Vernon boys winning 71-60. The win puts the Mt Vernon girls at 9-2 while the boys stay unbeaten at 9-0 and the Rivercrest Rebels take down Simms Bowie, 77-29.
Sulphur Springs – The Sulphur Springs Wildcats and Lady Cats suffer an upset sweep at the hands of the Texas High Tigers and Lady Tigers. The girls fell at home in their first district loss, 68-37 and are now 10-1. The boys dropped a tough game on the road in Texarkana, 77-66 and fall to 9-1 on the district season. The Wildcats host the Mt Pleasant Tigers next Tuesday with the winner having the edge for a district title. The Dallas Stars lost last night 3-0 to the L.A. Kings. The Stars maintain having 60 points on the season and still hold the top wildcard spot in the Western Conference, but the win gives the Kings 59 points to gain ground on Dallas.
The Dallas Mavericks look for a win tonight on the road when they visit the Phoenix Suns tipping off at 9:30.
As Super Bowl 52 approaches the status of New England’s Rob Gronkowski is still up in the air as the all-pro tight end continues going through concussion protocol. Gronkowski suffered the injury in the AFC title game after a hit from Barry Church. The Patriots take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday evening with kickoff at 5:30.
And in a big trade in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs send quarterback Alex Smith to Washington in exchange for a third-round draft selection and cornerback Kendall Fuller. Washington is expected to extend Smith, who’s in the final year of his current contract.
