Sulphur Springs Police were involved in a vehicle pursuit Friday morning. The chase ended when the suspect crashed on Pipeline Road between North Jackson Street and East Loop 301. The suspect fled on foot and multiple agencies participated in the search. The suspect was taken into custody later Friday afternoon. He’s been identified as Mark Houston Burkeen, Jr. and charged with evading arrest or detention with a vehicle. He is being held under a $100,000 bond in the Hopkins County jail.
Hopkins County deputies stopped forty-year-old Robert Matthew Rutledge and an Oklahoma passenger over the weekend for having an obstructed License plate in the 300 block of Hillcrest Dr. in Sulphur Springs—a K-9 located a quantity of methamphetamine in the vehicle as well as a handgun. They charged Rutledge with Possession of a Controlled Substance in a Drug-Free Zone and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. The passenger was arrested on traffic warrants. Both have been released.
