Area teams continue the opening week of practice in football and volleyball. Coming up this weekend the schools will introduce the teams to the community and will take part in intersquad scrimmages in football and round robin scrimmages in volleyball. Next week the football teams will begin practice in pads, while volleyball teams begin the regular season.
The pilot episode of the post trade Rangers didn’t go quite as planned last night with Texas falling to Baltimore 5-1. Yu Darvish was handed the loss after giving up three runs on six hits in six and a third innings pitched, adding nine strikeouts. Carlos Beltran and Jonathan Lucroy combine to go 0-6 with a walk and run scored. The Rangers and Orioles are back at it tonight at Camden Yards [on kplt 1490am and 96.3fm]. Cole Hamels is on the mound for Texas. First pitch is at 6:05.
The Dallas Cowboys had their first practice in pads yesterday afternoon in Oxnard, California and suffered their first injury. Backup quarterback, Kellen Moore went down with a broken right fibula. Surgery will be required and Moore is expected to miss 2-4 months. Rookie Dak Prescott out of Mississippi State will take over reps as the teams number 2 quarterback behind Tony Romo. The Cowboys have the day off today and return to practice tomorrow.
And the summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro kicks off today. And by kick off, I mean the Olympics begin with six women’s soccer matches, including team USA taking on New Zealand at 5pm.
