LeTourneau University

LeTourneau University

The LeTourneau University women’s soccer team recorded their second straight shutout in a 2-0 victory over Centenary College to remain undefeated to start their 2016 season.

LeTourneau University added women’s soccer in 1998, and their 3-0 start for the YellowJackets marks the best start in the university’s history of women’s soccer.

A goal in the 21st minute by freshman Kelli Sonnier went over the keeper’s head to put the YellowJackets up 1-0 early in the first half. A ball across the middle was tapped out wide by Kennedy Keer to the waiting Sonnier who found the top of the net. Kelli led the YellowJacket offense with five shots and 3 of those placed on goal.

With four minutes remaining in the first half Xanthe Sanchez who had just come off the bench found the ball at her feet just outside the 18 and took a touch toward the middle before letting it rip just over the goalkeeper’s outstretched arm to put the YellowJackets up 2-0 at the half.

The YellowJackets outshot the Ladies of Centenary 14-8 with LeTourneau putting six shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Brittany Hollis earned her second straight shutout; she has now played 254 minutes without giving up a goal.

LeTourneau will take to the road for the first time this season for games against Dallas Christian College and Southwestern Assemblies of God University, Friday, and Saturday. The YellowJackets will return to the Joyce Family Athletic Village on September 13 to take on Austin College.
