LeTourneau University men’s tennis competed at the ITA Regional Championships in Tyler over the weekend. Multiple YellowJackets were still serving Monday morning during the final day of matches.
Championship Draw
Senior Tyler Grove dropped the first game in the championship draw falling to Eric Chen of UT Dallas (6-4, 7-5). Also playing in the championship draw was freshman Christian Farris who played a tight first set with UT Tyler’s Ryan Elwood but lost the match (7-6(5), 6-1). Grove and Farris both played in the consolation bracket with Ty dropping his match to Tilden Oliver of Trinity (6-3, 6-1). Farris won his first round matchup (7-5, 5-7, 10-5) before falling in another tight match with Preston Glasscock of Austin College (6-2, 2-6, 10-7).
C Draw Singles
Sophomore Caleb Epps played a tight match with Hendrix College’s Luke Leffler dropping the game (6-7(3), 6-4, 10-8). Epps would bounce back in the C Draw Consolation bracket. He advanced to the finals with big wins over Adam Barnett of Ozarks (6-4, 6-1), Drew Lambert of Howard Payne (6-3, 6-1) and Travis Fortune of Austin College (6-1, 5-7, 10-5) before his finals matchup with Schreiner’s Ricky Puente who took the match 6-1, 7-5.
Freshman Alex Hernandez advanced to the quarterfinals with two wins over Zander Smith (McMurry) 7-5, 6-3 and Zachary Haynie (Concordia) 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.
Freshman Daniel Lopez defeated Ty Tarver of ETBU 6-4, 6-4 in his opening round match before falling to UT Tyler’s Cade Navarro 6-3, 7-6(4).
Junior Robby Bundy won his first round match over Cameron Vose of Hardin-Simmons (6-1, 4-6, 10-4) before falling to Brian Martin of ETBU in the second round (3-6, 7-5, 10-8).
Singles Orange
Senior Kevin Warren won his first match winning 12 straight sets for a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Henry Dana of Hendrix College. Warren would drop his quarterfinals match with UT Tyler’s Marco Miranda (6-2, 6-4).
Singles Blue
Sophomore Zac Crowley-Kurth won his first match over Akavian Cunningham of Ozarks (6-1, 6-1) advancing to the quarterfinals. Crowley-Kurth fell to Daniel Oxenreiter of Austin College by a score of 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
Singles White
Senior Josh Mueller won his first round matchup and advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over Anronio Pauda of McMurry (6-2, 6-4). In the quarterfinals, Mueller squared off against Austin College’s Jacob Morgan who took the match (6-1, 6-1).
Also playing in White Draw Singles was freshman Collin Patterson who dropped his first round matchup to De Los Santos of Schreiner University. Patterson would catch fire in the consolation bracket as he advanced to the finals with victories over Ozark’s Walker Murray (6-2, 6-1) and Ross Houk of ETBU (6-0, 6-3) before dropping a finals matchup with Schreiner’s Corbett by a score 6-2, 6-2.
A Draw Doubles
Ty Grover and Christian Farris took on the top-ranked duo of Grant Gideon and Niko Snovely of Southwest University. The Grover/Farris team lost 8-1 in a tough first round match in the championship draw.
B Draw Doubles
Caleb Epps and Daniel Lopez teamed up for a first-round victory over a duo from McMurry 8-3. In the second round, Epps and Lopez played a tough match but dropped 9-7 to Nash and White of Hardin-Simmons.
Also in B Draw Doubles, Jimmie Henson, and Alex Hernandez won 8-4 in their first round match with a duo from Texas Lutheran. In the second installment, Henson and Hernandez hung tough with an ETBU duo but dropped the game 8-6.
Robby Bundy and Kevin Warren also played in B Draw Doubles. The YellowJacket duo fell to Highsmith and Herr of ETBU 8-1 in their first round match.
Orange Doubles
The YellowJacket duo of Zac Crowley-Kurth and Collin Patterson made it to the finals with victories of Howard Payne (9-8(5) and TLU (8-5) before falling to Houk and Palmer of ETBU in the finals match by a score of 8-4.
