BASKETBALL – MEN

The YellowJacket men dropped a 70-77 decision to Sul Ross State on Saturday afternoon to finish a West Texas road trip and the start of ASC play.

“We didn’t shoot the ball or finish well on this road trip shooting a combined 39 percent in the two games. We had a lot of good looks but didn’t convert and never could get it to a one-possession game in the second half today,” said head coach Dan Miller. “I know our team is resilient and we have to respond now at home as we have a big home stretch coming up.”

Alec Colhoff <http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3307> led the scoring for LeTourneau with 18 points including nine from behind the three-point line.

Caylab Herrera <http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3325> helped pace the YellowJackets as he tied a season-high with 15 points and pulled down five rebounds. Freshman Nate West <http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3318> came off the bench to add 12 points.

LeTourneau (3-3, 0-2 ASC) led by six over the Lobos midway through the first half thanks to a Herrera three-point field goal at the 9:30 mark. SRSU answered with a 19-6 run to finish the half and took a seven-point lead into the break.

The Lobo lead would swell to as many as 18 in the second half as LeTourneau struggled to find the shooting touch. LETU shot just 36 percent from the floor and 23 percent from long range in the second period. The YellowJackets finished on an 8-0 run to close the margin, but the comeback attempt fell short as Sul Ross took the win 70-77.

Letourneau will return home for finals week and a Saturday afternoon matchup with McMurry University. The ASC showdown will be the first game of a six-game home stand for the YellowJackets. Tip-off is 3:00 pm from Solheim Arena.

BASKETBALL – WOMEN

crystal

#24 Crystal Jones

Senior Crystal Jones scored a season-high 35 points to lead the YellowJackets to a 67-56 victory over Sul Ross State on Saturday afternoon in Alpine.

LeTourneau (2-4, 1-1 ASC) forced 21 Lobo turnovers and held SRSU to just 36 percent (20-55) shooting from the floor and 25 percent (5-20) from behind the arc. The Lady Lobos were fresh off a win over No.3 UT Tyler on Thursday night but the YellowJackets defense stifled the Sul Ross shooters. LeTourneau created 26 points off turnovers and outscored SRSU 30-20, in the paint.

The YellowJackets were on a mission after a disappointing performance against Howard Payne. Jones, a Fort Worth, Texas native, poured in 35 points, one-shy of her career-high, a 36-point effort in the ASC Tournament last season against Hardin-Simmons. Crystal connected on 14 field goals including five three-point field goals.

“This was a solid team effort today. We got great intensity and execution of our game plan,” said head coach Leslie Reinecker <http://www.letuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=454> after the win. “It was exciting to see so many players step up when their name was called.”

Paige Demery <http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3363> was one of those players to step up as she recorded career-highs in both points and rebounds with 13 points and nine rebounds. Ashley Reed <http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3372> set up her teammates well as she recorded six assists and zero turnovers for LeTourneau. Ashley Crockett <http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3362> and Shaquicia Johnson <http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3366> contributed six and five points respectively to help bolster the YellowJacket offense. Crockett also pulled down six rebounds.

The YellowJackets used a 9-1 run in the second quarter to take a 13-point lead punctuated by a Crystal Jones <http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3367>jumper in transition. LETU would go into the break with a 10-point cushion as they lead 34-24.

The Lady Lobos would cut the lead to four in the second half on a Katy Boren three-point field goal. Jones would answer with five quick points of her own, and Paige Demery <http://www.letuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3363> added a jumper to push the lead back to 10 with 3:16 remaining in the game. The YellowJackets made free throws down the stretch to seal the victory and first conference win of the season.

The LeTourneau women will return home for finals week and a Saturday afternoon matchup with the McMurry Warhawks. The ASC matchup is the first of a six-game home stand for the YellowJackets and is set to tip-off at 1:00 pm from Solheim Arena.
