LeTourneau University senior Taylor Empkey, Bedford, Texas, of the men’s baseball team, was recognized at Academic Chapel by the School of Theology and Vocation on Monday.

The Who’s Who Among American Universities and Colleges as well as selected as the Outstanding Student in Theology recently inducted Empkey.

“Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges” is a national college student recognition program in the United States of America. It has been compiling its list since 1934. Participants include 2,842 tertiary institutions across 50 states and Washington D.C. It produces an annual Who’s Who in the list which is an academic publication that compiles a list of outstanding students in the United States. Students are honored based on outstanding campus leadership, scholastic ability (includes a GPA requirement), leadership on and off campus, and community service.

LeTourneau University is an interdenominational Christ-centered university located in Longview, Texas, with undergraduate and graduate programs online and at education centers around the state. Academic majors include aviation, business, communication, computer science, criminal justice, education, engineering, health care administration, health science-nursing, human services, kinesiology, the liberal arts, the sciences, and psychology.

LeTourneau University senior student-athletes Michael McLaughlin (men’s tennis / Horton, Alabama) and Giovanny Thompson (men’s basketball / Spring City, Texas) were recognized at Academic Chapel by the School of Education on Monday.

Renowned for the successful balance between their academic work and their athletic discipline were McLaughlin and Thompson. Both McLaughlin and Thompson have spent the spring semester serving as student teachers in East Texas, in addition to their participation in tennis and basketball, respectively.

“Michael has worked hard to be successful both on the court and in the classroom,” said LeTourneau head men’s and women’s tennis coach Suzanne Merritt. “I am excited for the continued growth of Michael as a teacher and as a coach. He has been a significant contributor to our success as a team throughout his career.”

“I am proud of Gio for demonstrating professionalism in his student teaching,” said LeTourneau head men’s basketball coach Dan Miller. “He is excited to give back as a teacher. It is exciting to see Gio have success both on the court and off his senior year!”
