Local Fire Chief, Treasurer Arrested

The former Chief and Treasurer of the Merit Volunteer Fire Department have been arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the department. Wilfred Lewis Barber and Connie Lou Barber were each charged with theft of more than $2500 but less than $30,000. They remain in the Hunt County Detention Center in lieu of $100,000 each. The indictments were the result of an investigation by the Hunt County Homeland Security/Fire Marshal’s Office.
