Local Sports Update for Dec. 17th

Sports Report for Thursday, December 17

A&M Commerce tips off their season. Sports brought to you by RENO TIRE AND SERVICE CENTER.

After 285 days away from outside competition, the Texas A&M University-Commerce men’s basketball team started the 2020-21 season Wednesday afternoon, falling to No. 3 West Texas A&M University by a 100-70 score.

The Lions fall to 0-1 to start the season with the loss. A&M-Commerce starts the Lone Star Conference season on Friday and Saturday at St. Edward’s, with tipoff of both games scheduled for 4 p.m.

The Paris lady cats will travel to Idabel for a basketball game tonight.

The NCAA’s Division I council approved blanket waivers for student-athletes in every sport on Wednesday, granting all transfers immediate eligibility for this season.

The decision will likely make the biggest impact in men’s and women’s basketball, which tipped off the 2020-21 season in late November. Some programs had already received waivers for transfers this year

NFL owners have delayed a decision on implementing a 17-game regular season for 2021.

During a teleconference call Wednesday that replaced the usual December gathering of owners in Dallas, they opted to push back any move on the expanded season until early in 2021. The NFL and the players’ union agreed during collective bargaining talks earlier this year to adding one regular-season game to the schedule, but not before next season.

The Dallas Mavericks will play their final preseason game tonight as they host the Minnesota timberwolves. Tip-off is at 7:30.

And the NFL week 15 kicks off tonight with an AFC West showdown as LA Chargers travel to Vegas to play the Raiders.
