Many Americans Try To Outdo Their Neighbors’ Home Improvements

When was the last time you saw your neighbor’s new mulched-in boxwoods, felt a jealous pang and decided to take on your own gardening project? If you answered “last week,” you’re far from alone. The Home Depot commissioned a survey of 1,000 Americans conducted by Wakefield Research to find out what home improvement projects are on the top of the list this spring. The research also revealed the motivation behind these projects. Findings show:

  • 53% of Americans admit they have tried to one-up their neighbors with an outdoor project
  • 54% of millennials say they are likely to update their décor
  • That’s compared to just 30% of baby boomers who said the same
  • 70% of millennials said they feel compelled to one-up their neighbors
  • 50% of millennials say they actually take on a project to outshine their neighbors
