MLB Postseason Begins Today Plus Gridiron Notes In Today’s Sports Update

 

The Paris Lady Cats will travel to North Lamar for a district volleyball game. Paris is 1-0 in the district while North Lamar is playing its first game. Both teams have spent time in the top 25 this season although, currently neither is ranked. In other local district action, Prairiland hosts Chapel Hill. Chisum travels to Mt Vernon. Avery is at Rivercrest. Detroit travels to Sulphur Bluff. While Clarksville hosts Maud.

The PJC Dragons will have an open practice tonight at 7:30 where fans can get a look at the 2019-2020 dragons.

Current Lone Star conference school Tarleton will join the Western Athletic Conference beginning in the 2020 season according to multiple sources. The news was first reported by Jeremy Bryant, the voice of Angelo State athletics. The Texans will play as an FCS independent in football and participate in the WAC for all other sports, including basketball, baseball, and softball. Tarleton’s football team is currently 4-0 this season and 2-0 in the LSC and beat FCS Stephen F. Austin 37-26 on the road to open the season.

Week 4 of the NFL season wrapped up last night with a dominating win by the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-3 over the Bengals.

And the national league wild card game is tonight as the Washington Nationals host the Milwaukee Brewers at 7:00 pm.

Another MLB manager gets the boot. The Los Angeles Angels have fired Brad Ausmus after only one season as their manager, increasing rampant speculation that Joe Maddon could soon replace him. The decision was formalized on Monday, one day after the team concluded a 90-loss season marked by the sudden death of young pitcher Tyler Skaggs.

Oakland Raiders linebacker Vontaze Burfict has been suspended for the rest of the 2019 season for his helmet-to-helmet hit Sunday on Indianapolis Colts tight end Jack Doyle, the league announced. Burfict was ejected in the second quarter of the Raiders’ 31-24 win. He was initially flagged for hitting Doyle in the head across the middle. But after the officials conferred, Burfict was thrown out. The league said that Burfict will be not be paid during the suspension, which covers the postseason as well. The league cited his repeated violations of unnecessary roughness rules in handing out the longest suspension ever for an on-field incident.

Bradley Chubb has a partially torn ACL in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season, a “huge loss” for the winless Denver Broncos. The Broncos coach Vic Fangio confirmed that Chubb, the fifth overall pick in the 2018 draft, suffered the season-ending injury in Denver’s 26-24 loss Sunday to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hardin-Simmons sophomore wide receiver Kevi Evans, from Mount Vernon, set a school record with nine catches for 269 yards and three touchdowns in the Cowboys’ 51-6 win at Louisiana College. He also set the school record for the longest reception with a 96-yard TD from Brennen Wooten. Evans added touchdowns of 46, 96 and 35 yards to earn his second career Player of the Week award.
