More High School Hoops Awards Announced in Today’s Local Sports

Paris – The 15-2A girls basketball all district team has been released. Senior Jamie Woods of Clarksville was named the districts MVP, while Lady Tiger’s Ken Sims was named coach of the year. Junior Bailee Greer of Detroit and Sophomore Katelyn Womack of Rivercrest are the offensive MVP’s, while Rivercrest Senior Angel Pena is a co-defensive MVP. And Rivercrest Junior Marli Hines was named newcomer of the year.
And due to weather conditions the Celina tournament the North Lamar Pantherette softball team was scheduled to play in has been cancelled.

Mount Pleasant – In baseball and softball the Mt. Pleasant Lady Tigers district contest against the Texas High Lady Tigers will be played today. Mt. Pleasant is 1-0 in district play. First pitch is set for 6pm. The opening day of the Highway 271 showcase was cancelled. And now the showcase as a whole has been cancelled. Mt. Pleasant Tiger baseball is scheduled to begin district play on Tuesday against Greenville. The Pittsburg Pirates return to action next Friday when they host Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill. The Red Devils will play a district contest against Hughes Springs on Tuesday as well.

Sulphur Springs – The Sulphur Springs Wildcat baseball team will continue tournament action at Texas High today. The Wildcat baseball team will then begin district play next Tuesday on the road against the Texas High Tigers. Meanwhile, tomorrow evening the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats continue district play when they host the Marshall Lady Mavericks. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6pm.

In college softball the Texas A&M Commerce Lady Lions hit the road to take on Eastern New Mexico for a pair of weekend double headers. Riding a 7 game winning streak the Lady Lions play at 1 and 3pm today, followed by tomorrow’s games at the same respective times.

Tonight in the NHL the 1st place is on the line in the western conference when the Dallas Stars host the Chicago Blackhawks at the AAC. Both teams enter the contest with 88 points on the season. Puck drop this evening is set for 7:30. The Stars will then host the St. Louis Blues in the 2nd half of a back to back tomorrow night at 8pm.
The Dallas Mavericks are in danger of falling to the bottom of the western conference playoff qualifiers. They’ll be on the road tomorrow to face the Indiana Pacers, who’re 7th in the eastern conference at 34-30 on the season. The Mavs have lost four straight and are 7th in the western conference at 33-32, but only half a game up on 8th place Houston. Tip off tomorrow night between the Mavs and Pacers is set for 1pm.

Free agency continues to heat up across the National Football League and the Dallas Cowboys make a significant play. Former Philadelphia Eagle defensive end Cedric Thornton has signed a four year deal worth 18 million dollars to join Dallas. Thornton would play as a one technique defensive tackle in the Cowboys 4-3 defense. The organization is will also be hosting defensive back Nolan Carroll and quarterback Matt Moore.
