MPHS Students Advance To Regionals

Twenty MPHS Students Advance to UIL Regionals

The Mount Pleasant High School Academic UIL Team brought something home from the District 16-5A Academic UIL Meet that they have never earned before the second-place trophy!

“We are very proud of this achievement because this is the highest MPHS has ever scored as a team in a tough Academic UIL District,” explained Dr. Judith Saxton, MPISD’s Director of Communications. “While several of our teams have advanced to regionals and even state UIL, we have never beaten Hallsville, Sulphur Springs and the rest of the District in Academic UIL. For some years, we placed last. To have reached second place, beating Sulphur Springs, is something to be celebrated.”

MPHS is sending five teams to the Regional Meet. The Calculator Applications team (David Barboza, Jose Liera, Pornphiphat Saiboonchan and Sanum Shahid), Math team (David Barboza, Jose Liera, Pornphiphat Saiboonchan and Nathon Segovia) and the Speech team (Audrey Courreges, Jaquacy Minter, Anthony Preciado, Ryan Sharp and Maritza Zambrano) all took first place at the District 16-5A UIL Academic Meet.

The Current Events team (Audrey Courreges Addison Hunter, Enrique Martinez, and Javier Martinez) and the Spelling and Vocabulary team (Rocio Hernandez, Annie Le, Ilse Vargas and Mary Vargas) both advanced to Regionals as Wild Card teams.
Two students advanced to the Regional Meet in individual categories.

Eric Vasquez advanced in Headline writing taking first in District. Nathon Segovia, who developed as a member of the Math team, also advanced in Science. Two other students pushed in two categories: Audrey Courreges in Current Events and Persuasive Speaking and Ryan Sharp in Informative Speaking and Prose Interpretation.

“I am thrilled that we have 20 students advancing to the Regional Meet,” said MPHS Academic UIL Coordinator Regina Crouch. “They have all worked hard to get to this point. I know that they and their coaches are working hard to prepare for regional competition.”
