Mount Pleasant ISD Winter Guards continue winning the season.

All four MPISD Winter Guard teams were back on the competition floor at Independence High School in Frisco on Saturday, February 4, for their second Winter Guard season competition at the North Texas Colorguard Association contest. Mount Pleasant ISD has a Winter Guard team at Mount Pleasant Junior High and three at Mount Pleasant High School, including the Varsity, JV A, and JV B teams. 

Mount Pleasant High School Varsity placed 2nd out of nine teams in the National A classification, scoring well ahead of several 6A programs. Their 2023 show is titled “Running Circles’ Round My Mind.”

The Mount Pleasant High School’s JV B team placed 2nd out of nine teams in the Scholastic A classification, their first time competing in a higher division after being promoted at their first competition. The JV B team also scored well ahead of several 6A programs with their show “Maniac.”

 Mount Pleasant High School’s JV A placed 4th out of ten teams in the Scholastic A classification. This year’s show is titled “Vivir Mi Vida.”

And the Mount Pleasant Junior Guard placed 1st in the Cadet classification, almost 4 points ahead of the next team with their show “Lost Boy.”

The Varsity and JV A teams will travel to Mansfield on February 18 for the WGI Dallas Regional at Lake Ridge High School. The Mount Pleasant Junior Guard is under the direction of Terri Marchan. Cristian Gomez is the director of Mount Pleasant High School Colorguard.

MPHS Choir members advance to UIL State

Twenty-eight Mount Pleasant High School Choir members competed at the Regional UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest at the Mount Pleasant High School Performing Arts Complex on Friday, February 3. 

Eight earned first-division ratings, and seven MPHS soloists have advanced to the State contest. To qualify for the state solo and ensemble contest, a student must score a “1” on a Class 1 piece, the most difficult to memorize and perform.

MPHS state solo qualifiers include seniors Litzy Gonzalez and Cheyenne Harrah, juniors Hope Powell, Adan Sargent, Jacolby Turner, Jacori Turner, and sophomore Kristina Tidwell. Sophomore Alivia Newman also received a division 1 on a Class 2 piece.

The state contest will be on May 27 and 29 in Austin. Nancy Vines directs the MPHS Choir with accompaniment provided by Deanna Warren.

MPHS HOSA Area 3 Spring Leadership Conference competitors

Mount Pleasant High School HOSA member advances to State

The Mount Pleasant High School chapter of HOSA: Future Health Professionals competed in the Area 3 Spring Leadership Conference on January 13-14 at Allen High School. The conference hosted approximately 1,600 students who competed in over 50 events. 

Junior Erika Mickens placed 3rd in the Medical Arts poster and has advanced to State. The Medical Art poster category requires students to create artwork that will stimulate others to explore health care and communicate this interpretation by developing a creative, artistic, and informational poster.

Additional MPHS HOSA competitors were Kaylee Connally in Extemporaneous Writing, Arielys Dennise Brito Torres and Isari Gonzalez in Job Seeking Skills, Elijah Rider and Zulma Mejia in Prepared Speaking, Saul Alvarado in Research Poster, Natalie Crockett, Ethan Harbor, and Perla Guzman in Community Awareness Team, Amy Santillan, Ariana Cruz, and Katherine Adame in Health Education Team, and Madeline Plascencia in Medical Art Poster.

Mickens will compete at the Texas HOSA State Leadership Conference on March 28-30 at the Kalahari Resort in Round Rock. MPHS HOSA advisors include Kristi Houchin, Cortney McCallum, Sarah Carrell, and Mandy Hutchings.
