MPHS Powerlifting competes in Lindale

The Mount Pleasant High School Tiger Powerlifters opened their season on Thursday, January 19, in Lindale, while the Lady Tigers were seeing action for the second time this year. The Lady Tigers closed the night with a 2nd place finish as a team, with the Tigers placing 6th. Multiple lifters placed in the top five within their respective weight classes, earning points for their teams and medals as individuals.

The 2023 Tigers return familiar faces with seniors Daniel Garcia and Oscar Otero, juniors Ryder Marshall and Karson Brown, and sophomores Jose Gonzalez and Seth Robertson. New faces for the Tigers are seniors Adrian Brooks and Brannon Aguero, juniors Trevor Broach, Karson Brown, Alex Castro, and Hudson Hampton, sophomores Devon Burtness, Luis Alvarado, Dylan Ramirez, and Anthony Gonzalez, and freshmen Daniel Castillo, Aidyn Chavez, Bruno DeLeon, and Blake Broach.

The Lady Tigers also have a host of returners, led by senior and 2022 5A State Champion Nayeli Jaimes, senior and 2022 State Finalist Alexandra Martinez, senior and Regional Finalist Jenna Cook, junior and Regional Finalist Araceli Landaverde, sophomore and Regional Finalist Jasmine Landaverde, and senior Audrie Mendoza, juniors Zoe Zittel, Jordan West and McKinsee Oviedo, and sophomore Xitlaly Sanchez. In addition, new faces for the Lady Tigers include freshman Atalee Gonzalez, sophomores Karen Hernandez, Dori Macedo, Alondra DeJesus, and juniors Abigail Retana, Brianne Davis, and Saniya Milton.

Lady Tiger 1st place medalists in their respective weight classes include Araceli Landaverde, Alexandra Martinez, and Nayeli Jaimes. Taking home 2nd place medals in their weight classes were Jasmine Landaverde and McKinsee Oviedo. Placing 3rd for the Lady Tigers was Karen Hernandez in her weight class. Coming in 4th in her weight class was Jordan West. And placing 5th in their weight classes were Zoe Zittel and Jenna Cook.

For the Tigers, Daniel Garcia and Ryder Marshall placed 2nd in their respective weight classes, while Jose Gonzalez placed 3rd in his. And placing 4th in their weight classes were Luis Alvarado and Devon Burtness.

The Varsity teams were back in Paris on Thursday, January 26. Don Woods and Drew Barnard coach MPHS Powerlifting.
