A Mt Pleasant man and his mother were arrested by Mt Pleasant Police after a seven-hour standoff with officers. The incident began when a 22-year-old man reported he had been hit and run over by a car driven by 29-year-old Jose Alverez. When officers arrived on the scene, they were met by Alverez’s mother, 57-year-old Antonio Rivera Alvarez, who said Jose was not home. She later changed her story but he refused to come out of the house. Officers then fired tear gas into the residence and Jose was taken to the hospital and then jail. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and evading arrest and detention. His mother was arrested for interference with police duties. Both have been released on bond.
