Mt Pleasant Tigers – Sports

Mount Pleasant Basketball | News | by Drew Barkley

The senior guard duo of Kelcey Morris and Payton Chism put on a clinic at Texas High on Friday night as the Tigers extended their season-long win streak to 22 games with a 77-52 thrashing of the rival Tigers. Morris and Chism combined for 47 of the Tigers’ 77 points, with Morris pouring in 23 points and Chism notching 24 points. The win moved the Tigers to 3-0 in District 15-5A, sitting atop the league tied with Tyler.

Mount Pleasant jumped ahead early, as they’ve done all season, using an 11-2 run to start the game. The Tigers would push the lead further and close out the first frame with a 21-9 advantage. That advantage would only increase as Mount Pleasant made another run of 17-5 to most assuredly put the game away in the first half and lead 44-16 at the half. Texas High would outscore the Tigers 23-19 in the third, but the hole was already too deep for them to climb out of as Mount Pleasant cruised the rest of the way.

Morris was relentless in his attack of the basket shooting 9 of 13 from the field and 4 of 6 from the charity stripe, including two rebounds and three assists. Chism rebounded from one of his worst career outings last game going 4-of-8 from behind the arc and 9-of-14 overall with five assists and five steals. Kai Price scored in double figures with 10 points and notched seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Reggie Webster was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line for eight total points. Carter Chism chipped in 6 points, a game-high six assists, and Kyler Smith added 4 points. Luke Hampton had 2 points to round out the scoring.

Mount Pleasant has boosted its rankings across the state, with TABC putting the Tigers at 10. MaxPreps has Mount Pleasant at 5 in Class 5A and 17 across all classifications in Texas, while GASO has the Tigers ranked 9. The Tigers are making waves across the state as they continue their push for another district title.

The Tigers (22-0, 3-0) will travel to Pine Tree (9-9, 1-2) on Tuesday, January 13, to faceoff with the Pirates at 7:00 pm. The freshmen and JV will play earlier, with their tip scheduled for 5:00 and 5:30, respectively. Mount Pleasant’s next home game will be against Longview Friday, January 17.
